The JSW Combat PHEV is set to debut in India before the end of 2026 as the automaker’s inaugural foray into India with its new five-seat SUV. JSW Group’s passenger vehicle arm, JSW Motors, is set to debut the Combat as its inaugural model under its own brand, separate from its existing JSW MG Motor joint venture, and is set to feature local assembly at the company’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra facility. Combat will draw from the Chery Jetour T2 as its boxy five-seater adventure SUV foundation, which also features a rugged design aesthetic, and is expected to retain the majority of its design language, with some tweaks to the headlamps, grille, bumpers and JSW-specific badges for the Indian market.
JSW Combat’s expected India-spec heart is a plug-in hybrid powertrain consisting of a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, and two electric motors, and an approximately 18.4 kWh battery pack. Global variants of this powertrain deliver a combined output in the region of 360 hp and 610 Nm of torque, channelled through a three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission, in primarily front-wheel-drive form for the domestic market. The battery pack is said to deliver a range of approximately 90 km of pure electric range under the NEDC cycle, with a combined driving range that can reach up to 1,200 km on a full tank and full charge. Charging is expected to support both AC and DC options, with relatively quick top-ups possible via DC fast charging.
Positioned as a premium yet accessible plug-in hybrid SUV, the JSW Combat is expected to sit in a price band starting upwards of Rs 30 lakh and potentially stretching towards Rs 50 lakh, depending on variant and specification. Competing against larger SUVs and electrified vehicles, the Combat offers a blend of electric-only range for shorter daily commutes, and overall range for longer journeys. Interior expectations include a modern cabin with large touchscreens, digital displays, premium audio and a suite of comfort and assistance features drawn from the global T2, but final Indian equipment levels will be confirmed closer to launch.
As JSW Motors looks to carve its niche in the Indian passenger vehicle segment, the JSW Combat represents a crucial first step into the market with a locally assembled, plug-in hybrid SUV featuring distinctive design and substantial electric range, entering a market that is growing increasingly receptive to hybrid technology.
