Bentley has unveiled the Torcal, its first production electric vehicle and first ever all new model line in a decade. The luxury SUV sees the marque embrace electrification while retaining the feel of the brand’s renowned craftsmanship and presence. The Torcal is set to launch in India in the second half of 2027 with early indications pointing to a price of around Rs 4.5 crore ex-showroom – significantly more expensive than the Bentayga despite being slightly smaller in size.The higher level of expected pricing in India is due to the treatment of electric vehicles under the UK-India free trade agreement, which does not provide the same customs-duty benefits to EVs as for certain other imported cars. As such, the Torcal will represent a premium offering even within Bentley’s own range. The model will see a lower starting price globally (in markets such as the UK), but local taxation and import structures will determine its final cost for Indian buyers.
The Torcal is built on the Volkswagen Group’s Premium Platform Electric architecture which is also used for the Porsche Cayenne Electric. It utilises two permanent-magnet motors which draw power from a 113 kWh net battery pack on an 800-volt system to produce up to 888 horsepower and 1,350 Nm of torque in the higher-specification version – the most powerful production Bentley by torque to date. Acceleration figures are also impressive, with the flagship version able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under three seconds and a claimed WLTP range of up to 600 kilometres. A fast-charging capability allows a large top-up in a short period of time, enabling the long-distance grand touring feel expected of a Bentley.
Design-wise, the Torcal sits lower and is slightly shorter than the standard-wheelbase Bentayga, with the appearance of a more coupe-like profile thanks to its short overhangs and three-metre plus wheelbase. The exterior maintains the elegant feel of Bentley, but incorporates cleaner lines suitable for an electric model. Inside, the interior continues Bentley’s tradition of handcrafted luxury, with the option of high-quality materials and comfort features. The rear bench is notable as the first in a Bentley to offer power-folding capability.
The Torcal represents more than just a powertrain change for Bentley, but is the brand’s fourth distinct model line and heralds the start of a strategy to embrace broader electrification. While the marque has had to revise its earlier timeline for a fully electric line-up, the Torcal is set to deliver an all-electric luxury offering which retains the refinement, performance and exclusivity which owners of the winged badge expect. For the Indian market, the arrival of the Torcal in the second half of 2027 will enable local buyers to experience Bentley’s first electric model at a time when interest in premium EVs is set to continue rising among affluent customers. Despite its higher price, the British craftsmanship, impressive performance and electric innovation of the Torcal is expected to have wide appeal among those looking to purchase an alternative to conventional luxury SUVs.
