Mercedes-Benz India today unveiled the much-anticipated facelifted 2026 S-Class, marking a significant update to its flagship luxury sedan. The launch introduces the model’s first plug-in hybrid powertrain in the Indian market, aligning with the growing demand for electrified luxury vehicles while maintaining the S-Class’s reputation for unparalleled comfort, advanced technology, and refined performance.

The new S 450e plug-in hybrid is priced between Rs 2.20 crore and Rs 2.38 crore (ex-showroom). This represents a premium of approximately Rs 35 lakh over the outgoing model’s starting price of Rs 1.85 crore. Bookings are now open, with deliveries expected to commence around Diwali 2026.

Two variants of the S 450e are available for booking. Mercedes-Benz positions the updated S-Class against rivals like the BMW 7 Series in the ultra-luxury segment.

The highlight of the India launch is the S 450e with EQ Hybrid Technology. It combines a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six petrol engine with an electric motor, delivering a combined output of around 435 hp and 680 Nm of torque. A 22 kWh battery supports a pure-electric range of up to 100-115 km (under ideal conditions), making it suitable for emission-conscious urban driving and longer commutes.

Performance remains impressive, with a 0-100 kmph sprint in approximately 5.7 seconds. The powertrain is paired with an automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive in this configuration. Additional mild-hybrid petrol (S 450) and possibly diesel options are expected to join the lineup later.

The facelifted S-Class features evolutionary yet noticeable styling changes. Key highlights include:

  • A larger front grille with chrome star-pattern inserts and an illuminated surround.
  • Redesigned headlights with triple three-pointed star daytime running lights and advanced micro-LED Digital Light technology (improved illumination by up to 40%, with ultra-range high beams reaching 600 metres).
  • A backlit Mercedes emblem on the bonnet.
  • New alloy wheel designs, including optional high-pressure cast 50-spoke units.
  • Subtle side and rear updates that retain the model’s elegant silhouette.

Mercedes claims that more than 50% of the vehicle (around 2,700 components) has been reworked, making this one of the most extensive facelifts in the model’s history.

Inside, the cabin embraces the new MB.OS digital architecture with a Superscreen setup:

  • A 12.3-inch driver display, front passenger screen, and a large 14.4-inch central touchscreen.
  • Dual 13.1-inch rear entertainment screens with updated touch controllers.
  • AI-powered features, cloud connectivity, Google Maps integration, and a generative AI assistant.
  • Facial recognition camera for personalization, video calling, and cabin monitoring.
  • Luxurious touches like leather upholstery, optional wood trims, illuminated climate vents, and rear seats with up to 43-degree recline, heating, ventilation, and massage functions.

Safety is enhanced with up to 15 airbags, Level 2+ ADAS, and advanced driver assistance systems. Rear-axle steering (4.5 or 10 degrees) and adaptive air suspension ensure supreme ride comfort.

The introduction of the PHEV variant reflects Mercedes’ strategy to future-proof its lineup amid evolving regulations and customer preferences for lower emissions without compromising luxury
