The Hosur ecosystem continues to attract EV manufacturers, with this time a major new factory of TVS-backed Ultraviolette set to come up. The Bengaluru-based electric two-wheeler manufacturer has announced plans to set up its BIGGA (Big Global Ambition) Factory in SIPCOT Industrial Park in Shoolagiri near Hosur in Tamil Nadu. The EV maker aims to produce its full portfolio of vehicles at the new factory as it extends its manufacturing footprint and signals the move from being a premium performance brand to higher-volume segments.
Ultraviolette will invest around ₹779 crore in the Hosur plant over the next four to five years as part of a larger expansion which also includes further investment in its existing factory in Karnataka. Phase I of the BIGGA Factory, which will have an annual capacity of around 2.5 lakh vehicles, will be supported by infrastructure that will be able to scale production to 5 lakh units per year in a later phase after 2029. The plant is expected to create around 2,000 jobs in its initial phase, with employment increasing as the operations expand and more production lines come online. Company officials have mentioned that the total investment in both the states could approach ₹1,000 crore, including upgrades to the existing Jigani facility.
The new factory will manufacture the much-anticipated Tesseract electric scooter and support the company’s future range of products across various segments, including sports, crossover, cruiser and street motorcycles as well as scooters. Ultraviolette expects scooters and motorcycles to eventually contribute about equally to its volumes and the Tesseract to help it ramp up towards 10,000 units a month once the full production begins. Production of the scooter is set to start in early 2027, initially supported by the existing Karnataka plant before being shifted mainly to Hosur upon commissioning of the new factory. Officials have targeted a go-live time of six- to eight-months for the new plant, with full-scale production expected in the following financial year.
Hosur has been selected for its well-established automotive supply chain, proximity to the Ultraviolette research and development centre in Bengaluru and the extensive vendor ecosystem to which it already has access. The location is only around 1.5 hours by road from the company’s R&D operations, providing a considerable logistical advantage compared with other sites, which were considered. The Tamil Nadu government is facilitating the land allotment for the project at SIPCOT Industrial Park, which further eases the path to construction. The company’s existing facility near Bengaluru will continue operations alongside the new plant, creating a dual-manufacturing base that boosts Ultraviolette’s overall capacity and its resiliency in southern India.
Backed by investors including TVS Motor, Qualcomm Ventures, TDK Ventures, Zoho Corporation and others, Ultraviolette is targeting the BIGGA Factory as a key enabler of its next phase of growth in the domestic mass-market segment and in international markets. The company has already secured substantial paid bookings for the Tesseract and sees strong underlying demand that the existing capacity cannot fully meet. By scaling up in Hosur, Ultraviolette is set not only to serve the rapidly growing Indian electric two-wheeler market but to also boost exports in the coming years. The move also strengthens Hosur’s reputation as a preferred destination for electric vehicle manufacturing in India, with other players having already established a presence in the region.
