Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) is doubling down on its “multi-pathway” approach to green mobility. As the Indian market transitions toward CAFE III emission standards, Toyota is preparing to refresh its existing hits and introduce new high-volume hybrid options.
From a more accessible Innova to a stretched-out Hyryder, here are the three major Toyota strong hybrids expected to hit the roads in 2026.
1. Toyota Innova Hycross: The “Fleet-Focused” Lower-Spec Hybrid
With the legendary Innova Crysta diesel expected to be phased out by early 2027 to comply with stricter norms, Toyota is planning a strategic replacement. The company is developing a lower-spec, “de-contented” version of the Innova Hycross Strong Hybrid specifically targeted at fleet operators and budget-conscious private buyers.
- The Strategy: Currently, the hybrid variants carry a significant premium over the base petrol models. This new variant will strip away high-end features (like the panoramic sunroof or Ottoman seats) to bring the entry-point for hybrid technology closer to the outgoing Crysta’s pricing.
- Efficiency: It will retain the 2.0L TNGA 5th Gen Hybrid powertrain, delivering a stellar 23.24 kmpl (ARAI), making it a perfect tool for high-mileage users.
2. Toyota Hyryder 7-Seater: The Family Extender
Toyota is currently testing a three-row version of the Urban Cruiser Hyryder (internally codenamed to rival the likes of the Safari and Alcazar). This model will feature a longer wheelbase and an extended rear overhang to accommodate the third row.
- Powertrain: It will carry forward the 1.5L TNGA Atkinson Cycle strong hybrid system.
- AWD Capabilities: Spotted test mules have shown rear axle shafts, hinting that Toyota might offer an All-Wheel Drive (AWD) option with the hybrid setup—a rarity in this segment.
- Key Features: Expect a redesigned tailgate, new LED taillamps, and dedicated AC vents for the third-row passengers.
- Launch: Slated for the second half of 2026, likely around the festive season.
3. Toyota Hyryder Facelift: Mid-Life Refresh
The current Hyryder has been a massive success since its 2022 debut. As it nears its four-year mark, Toyota is preparing a mid-life update to keep it competitive against newer rivals like the upcoming Creta EV and the MG Starlight.
- Interior Upgrades: The facelift is expected to receive a major tech overhaul, including a 10.1-inch infotainment system, a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster, and an 8-speaker premium audio system.
- Safety First: The biggest addition will be Level 2 ADAS, featuring adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, and lane-keep assist.
- Cosmetic Changes: Subtle exterior tweaks to the bumpers, grille, and alloy wheel designs to align it with Toyota’s global “Ebella” design language.
- Launch: Expected to debut alongside the 7-seater version in late 2026.
Why the Push for Hybrids?
Toyota’s strategy is clear: provide high-mileage, low-emission vehicles that don’t rely on a charging grid. By expanding the Hyryder family and making the Hycross hybrid more affordable, Toyota aims to maintain its dominance in the MPV and SUV segments while staying ahead of India’s rapidly evolving environmental regulations.
