In the rapidly evolving landscape of Indian electric mobility, Ather Energy has officially shifted into high gear. The Bengaluru-based EV manufacturer has crossed the monumental 600,000 sales milestone, a feat that highlights a dramatic shift in market adoption.
The most striking detail of this achievement? 50% of these total sales—over 300,000 units—were recorded in just the last 16 months. Since its commercial debut in 2018, Ather has now delivered a total of 604,497 electric scooters to customers across India.
Ather’s journey from a niche performance brand to a mass-market leader is reflected in its recent retail performance. The company has seen an unprecedented spike in demand over the last two calendar years:
- CY2025: The Record Breaker – Ather achieved its best-ever annual performance with 201,129 units sold.
- CY2026 (YTD): The Momentum Continues – In just the first few months of 2026, the company has already moved 99,159 units, putting it on track to potentially eclipse its 2025 record.
Two strategic pivots have transformed Ather’s sales trajectory: the introduction of a family-focused product and a revolutionary ownership model.
1. The Rizta Factor
Launched exactly two years ago, the Ather Rizta broke the “sporty” mold of the 450 series. By prioritizing seat space, storage, and comfort, Ather successfully tapped into the conservative family segment that previously steered clear of the aggressive 450X. Today, the Rizta serves as the primary volume driver, bringing in a completely new demographic of riders.
2. Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS)
Perhaps the biggest hurdle for EV adoption has been the high upfront cost. Ather’s BaaS (Battery-as-a-Service) option decoupled the battery price from the vehicle cost. This move brought the entry price of an Ather EV closer to that of premium petrol scooters, making the transition to electric a “no-brainer” for budget-conscious buyers.
Expanding the Footprint
This sales surge has been supported by an aggressive infrastructure blitz. From a few experience centers in major metros, Ather has expanded its retail presence deep into Tier-II and Tier-III cities. Coupled with the reliability of the Ather Grid—which remains one of India’s most dependable fast-charging networks—consumer confidence has reached an all-time high.
To put this in perspective, it took Ather nearly six years to sell its first 300,000 units. It has matched that entire history in less than a year and a half.
While the 450 series built Ather’s reputation for tech and performance, the Ather Rizta has been the true volume accelerator. Launched two years ago, the Rizta moved away from the aggressive, sharp styling of its predecessors to focus on the “Indian Family.”
With the largest seat in its segment, massive storage space, and a focus on ride comfort over outright speed, the Rizta successfully courted a demographic that previously viewed EVs as too small or too sporty. It has effectively widened Ather’s net, capturing the “commuter” market that drives the bulk of India’s two-wheeler sales.
Beyond product design, Ather’s growth has been fueled by financial innovation. The introduction of the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model has been a game-changer for affordability.
By allowing customers to purchase the scooter without the upfront cost of the battery—and instead paying for the battery via a subscription or usage-based model—Ather slashed the initial purchase price. This move brought the Rizta and 450 series into direct price competition with premium petrol-powered scooters (ICE), removing the “price barrier” that often halts EV transitions.
With a robust manufacturing setup and an ever-expanding retail footprint in Tier-II and Tier-III cities, Ather Energy is no longer just a startup; it is a scaled industry titan.
As the brand crosses the 6-lakh mark, the focus now shifts toward the 1-million-unit milestone. Given the current trajectory and the success of its diversified portfolio, Ather is proving that once you find the right balance of practicality and affordability, the Indian consumer is more than ready to go electric.
