Tata Motors has announced the teaser version of its next passenger vehicle offering – the Tata Aeris, a renamed and reimagined version of the popular Tata Tigor, due to debut in India on September 25, 2026. The Tigor nameplate will be retired as Tata Motors looks to breathe new life into the increasingly competitive sub-four metre sedan segment with a fresh identity that appeals to value-conscious commuters.

The decision to rename the long-selling Tata Tigor reflects Tata Motors’ strategy of rejuvenating its product portfolio in response to changing customer preferences and market dynamics. While the Tigor had delivered on core attributes of value, reliability and performance, it failed to match the sales success of key competitors such as the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Hyundai Aura and Honda Amaze. By launching a new model called Tata Aeris, with a name that connotes lightness and modernity, Tata Motors is aiming to position this as a complete departure from the previous generation.

The teaser images recently released by Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles offer a glimpse into the extensive exterior revamp that the Aeris is set to undergo. The front fascia gets a bolder look with slim LED headlamps with integrated daytime running lights, a redesigned bumper and chiseled bodylines that lend the sedan a sportier and more premium feel. The striking purple colour variant already unveiled hints at an expanded range of vibrant colours that will be on offer. A four-door sedan silhouette, which Indian buyers have come to expect, is retained with subtle design elements borrowed from the refreshed Tiago hatchback.

The interior is also set to receive a significant upgrade, featuring a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, a semi-digital instrument cluster, cruise control, 360-degree camera, automatic climate control, rear air-conditioning vents and enhanced material quality. Safety features are slated to be bolstered, with six airbags likely to become a standard or widely available feature across variants, reflecting customer expectations and regulatory trends.

Powertrain options are unlikely to change, with Tata’s proven 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine set to continue powering the Aeris, mated to both manual and automated manual transmissions. A factory-fitted CNG variant is also expected to be offered, catering to the cost-conscious buyer segment, while an all-electric Aeris.ev is reportedly being considered for a later launch to capitalise on the growing interest in electric vehicles.Priced within the ₹6 lakh to ₹10 lakh ex-showroom range, the Tata Aeris is expected to maintain its appeal to a broad customer base, encompassing families and first-time sedan buyers.

With the festive season around the corner, the September 25 launch date for the Aeris is perfectly timed to capture the attention of customers shopping for a new car. Tata Motors has bet big on a new model, a fresh name and new features to differentiate itself from the competition and to re-establish its presence in the sub-compact sedan category. The automotive community will be watching closely to see if the Aeris can take off and make a splash in the market.
