In a major leap towards sustainable and contemporary policing, Kolkata Police has inducted 183 Ultraviolette X47 Skyforce electric motorcycles into its two-wheeler fleet. This formal handover and flag-off ceremony took place at Lalbazar Police Headquarters on Friday, September 18, 2026, during the occasion of Vishwakarma Puja. The motorcycles have been specifically configured for police patrol and operational activities across the territory and represent an important augmentation of the force’s electric vehicle presence.
The X47 Skyforce is a modified patrol version of Ultraviolette’s crossover electric motorcycle. These are not just standard models modified to fit law enforcement needs but rather include operational features suitable for day-to-day police work. Features such as sirens and hooters, a public address system, LED blinkers, holders for microphones and walkie-talkies, distinctive police decals, and side panniers for carrying equipment have been incorporated after testing for suitability for the demands of the job in city traffic and emergency response scenarios.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Nand flagged off the new fleet in the presence of P.B. Salim, Chairman and Managing Director of West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited. The acquisition of these electric motorcycles has been made possible as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility initiative. Commissioner Nand reiterated that these electric vehicles will primarily support the dial 112 emergency response network to ensure faster and more efficient response to distress while simultaneously reducing the environmental impact of conventional petrol-driven vehicles.
This induction represents another step in a larger effort at transitioning to greener options within Kolkata Police. Earlier in July, the force had initiated the process of replacing the iconic red Royal Enfield motorcycles traditionally associated with its traffic sergeants in favour of more environmentally friendly alternatives. The practical advantages of switching to electric vehicles have been pointed out by officials as being manifold: reduced pollution (both in terms of air and noise), significantly lower fuel costs, and the ability to meet the same standards of performance in city conditions. This transition has also been supported by earlier initiatives in collaboration with the West Bengal Pollution Control Board to encourage the adoption of cleaner mobility options for the police forces across the state.
Ultraviolette has reported this induction as being its first large-scale induction into any police fleet in India. The X47 platform represents a model that has been developed with an emphasis on performance, manoeuvrability as well as range in mind – ideal for city conditions while still catering to the requirements of carrying equipment.
Kolkata Police’s transition to electric mobility is not limited to two-wheelers. The force has already acquired a significant number of Tata Nexon EVs to be incorporated into the four-wheeler fleet. These were acquired in greater numbers starting from a major induction of 226 units in 2021–22, with subsequent additions as well. The Nexon EV has thus become a common sight in the city, fulfilling a variety of purposes in terms of transport and patrolling duties while replacing older diesel vehicles used for similar purposes. In recent times, the department has announced its plans to augment this fleet of electric cars in its four-wheeler fleet. Commissioner Nand has indicated that additional electric cars are likely to join the force soon as part of efforts to make a larger portion of the overall vehicle fleet eco-friendly. In tandem with the induction of the 183 Ultraviolette X47 Skyforce motorcycles, these efforts at transitioning existing four-wheeler fleets to electric vehicles will see Kolkata Police making steady strides in its commitment to sustainability.
