The Kia Sorento has officially launched in India today, taking the global fourth-generation model in its latest facelifted form to the country’s premium three-row SUV segment. Produced at Kia’s Anantapur facility in Andhra Pradesh, the India-spec version arrives as the brand’s new flagship internal-combustion offering, positioned above the Seltos and Carens and introducing strong-hybrid technology and all-wheel-drive capability for the first time in Kia’s local lineup.
The Sorento looks extremely strong on paper. Power comes from a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol strong hybrid developing around 238 hp and 380 Nm of combined torque, paired with an automatic transmission and available with all-wheel drive (the first such hybrid AWD combination from Kia in India). A turbo-diesel option, expected to be the familiar 2.2-litre unit producing roughly 202 hp and 441 Nm, also joins the range, with automatic gearboxes across the board. Seven-seat (and in some configurations six-seat) versatility is standard, giving families the space they demand without compromising the vehicle’s substantial presence. Based on the global model, it has a length of around 4,815 mm and a 2,815 mm wheelbase, ranking it among the larger contenders in its class.
Inside the Sorento looks equally strong, with classy materials and a modern dual-screen setup creating a premium atmosphere. A long list of features includes a panoramic sunroof, Level 2 ADAS, ventilated and electrically adjustable front seats, second-row comfort headrests and sunshades, a powered tailgate, ambient lighting and dual-zone climate control. A special Blackline trim adds visual drama for buyers seeking a more distinctive, darker aesthetic. Notably, the India-spec Sorento becomes the first model in the world to feature Kia’s Live Generative AI-powered voice assistant – able to talk to the car and control functions and information access.
The bigger headline today will almost certainly be pricing. The Sorento, being built at Anantapur, has significant localisation advantages that have enabled Kia to hit aggressive numbers (estimates range from the high ₹20-lakh territory into the ₹35-45 lakh ex-showroom zone depending on variant). With sharp pricing, the model can and will have a real chance at a dream run. In the premium three-row space the competition is fairly thin outside of the mighty Toyota Fortuner, with models such as the Skoda Kodiaq, Volkswagen Tayron, Jeep Meridian and MG Majestor offering alternatives but few that match the combination of hybrid efficiency, AWD capability, space and modern tech in one package. It is very much Kia’s game to win.
The India-specific details – exact power and torque figures, full variant structure, feature lists, and most importantly, the price list – are emerging from the launch floor as the day unfolds. Pre-bookings have already been open, and the first locally produced units have rolled off the Anantapur line. If Kia meets the promise that local production can enable, the facelifted fourth-generation Sorento looks well placed to have a significant impact and establish itself as a serious long-term player in India’s premium SUV market.
