As India’s CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) III norms tighten, the automotive landscape is shifting. To meet stricter emission targets while addressing “range anxiety,” manufacturers are pivoting toward Strong Hybrids and Plug-in Hybrids (PHEVs). These vehicles deliver diesel-like torque and efficiency without the infrastructure hurdles of pure EVs.
Leading this charge in 2026 are three highly anticipated SUVs: the Honda ZR-V, Jetour T2, and MG Starlight 560.
1. Honda ZR-V: The Premium Hybrid Halo
Honda is set to bring the ZR-V e:HEV to India as a CBU (Completely Built Unit) import. Positioned as a premium offering above the Elevate, it aims to compete with the likes of the Volkswagen Tiguan and Skoda Kodiaq.
- Powertrain: A 2.0-litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine paired with Honda’s dual-motor e:HEV system.
- Performance: The electric traction motor does the heavy lifting, delivering 184 PS and 315 Nm of torque.
- Efficiency: International variants boast fuel economy figures between 22–26 kmpl, making it one of the most efficient in its class.
- Arrival: Expected in late 2026, with an estimated price tag between ₹50–60 lakh.
2. Jetour T2 PHEV: The “Defender” of Efficiency
A debut product from the JSW-Chery partnership, the Jetour T2 brings rugged, boxy aesthetics (reminiscent of the Land Rover Defender) to the mid-size SUV segment. Unlike standard hybrids, this is a Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), allowing for significant electric-only range.
- Powertrain: A 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine mated to a 3-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT).
- Electric Range: Equipped with a 26.7 kWh LFP battery, it offers an impressive electric-only range of up to 139 km.
- Capabilities: Features a 4WD-ready stance with a 205 mm ground clearance and multiple terrain modes (Snow, Mud, Sand).
- Arrival: Slated for a Diwali 2026 launch, with prices expected to start around ₹20–25 lakh.
3. MG Starlight 560: The Tech-Forward PHEV
Following the JSW-MG Motor India collaboration, the MG Starlight 560 (based on the Wuling Starlight 560) has been spotted testing on Indian roads. It is designed to be a high-volume disruptor in the mid-size SUV space.
- Powertrain: A 1.5-litre petrol engine combined with a powerful electric motor, producing a total output of ~194 BHP.
- PHEV Advantage: A 20.5 kWh battery pack provides an electric-only range of approximately 100 km, ideal for zero-emission city commutes.
- Dimensions: At roughly 4.7 meters long, it offers more cabin space than many of its direct rivals, targeting the Mahindra XUV700 and Tata Safari segment.
- Arrival: Expected to launch by October 2026 (Diwali season), likely manufactured at MG’s upgraded Halol facility to ensure competitive pricing.
The push for these models is driven by the upcoming CAFE III standards, which require manufacturers to significantly lower the average CO2 emissions of their entire fleet. By introducing Strong Hybrids and PHEVs, brands like Honda, JSW Jetour, and MG can earn “super credits,” helping them offset the emissions of their traditional internal combustion (ICE) models while providing consumers with a high-performance, eco-friendly alternative.
