BYD, the world’s largest electric vehicle maker, is preparing to introduce its premium Denza brand in India, with the luxury Denza D9 electric MPV expected to lead the charge as the first model from the marque. According to reports, the Chinese automaker is targeting a launch around the festive Diwali season in 2026, though an early 2027 debut at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo (BMGE) remains a possibility if timelines shift.

The electric version of the Denza D9 is prioritized for the Indian market, positioning it as a high-end executive multi-purpose vehicle that aims to slot into a sweet spot in the growing luxury MPV segment. It is expected to sit above the MG M9 (priced at around ₹79.95 lakh ex-showroom) while undercutting the Toyota Vellfire (₹1.20–1.30 crore) and the even more expensive Lexus LM (starting above ₹2 crore). Reports suggest a potential price range in the vicinity of ₹80 lakh to ₹1 crore, making it an accessible yet premium electric alternative for chauffeur-driven buyers seeking space, technology, and refinement.

Denza, BYD’s upscale sub-brand focused on advanced electrified mobility and luxury, has built a strong reputation in China and select international markets with the D9. The model is a large, seven-seater MPV available globally in both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid (DM-i) forms. Recent updates, including the second-generation version, feature BYD’s Blade Battery technology, impressive claimed ranges (up to around 750–800 km CLTC on electric variants in some configurations), fast-charging capabilities, and a host of premium amenities such as advanced seating with massage functions, high-end audio, and sophisticated driver-assistance systems.

In India, the electric D9 is expected to arrive first as a completely built-up (CBU) import, allowing BYD to enter the market quickly and gauge demand before deciding on longer-term localization or expansion of the Denza portfolio. Dedicated Denza outlets could eventually handle sales, separating it from the mainstream BYD lineup already present in the country.

The timing aligns with rising interest in premium electric MPVs. The MG M9 has already carved a space as a more affordable all-electric option with strong features and space, while the Toyota Vellfire remains a benchmark for hybrid luxury and brand prestige among business and VIP users. The Denza D9’s electric powertrain, modern design, and technology-focused luxury could appeal to buyers looking for a quieter, more efficient alternative with contemporary flair.

If the Diwali 2026 target holds, the D9 would mark a significant step in BYD’s Indian ambitions, expanding beyond volume models into the premium segment. Should there be delays, the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in early 2027 (reports mention February) could serve as the official showcase platform, potentially alongside a broader Denza brand introduction.

As India’s luxury and electric vehicle markets continue to mature, the arrival of the Denza D9—should the reports materialize—promises to intensify competition in the executive MPV space, offering buyers another sophisticated, zero-emission choice for both urban and long-distance travel. Further official confirmation from BYD on pricing, exact specifications, and the precise launch window is awaited.
