Ather Positions Konarc as Its Gateway to the Mainstream Electric Scooter Market

Konarc holds a special place at Ather Energy. As the first product built on the company’s brand-new EL platform, it is the scooter around which Ather is constructing its new factory in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and the vehicle with which the brand plans to go truly mainstream.

The statement captures the significance Ather attaches to the model. Until now, the Bengaluru-based electric two-wheeler maker has primarily targeted premium and technology-focused buyers with its 450 series and the family-oriented Rizta. Konarc marks a deliberate shift toward the high-volume commuter segment, where affordability, everyday practicality, lower ownership costs and broader accessibility matter most.

The EL Platform: Foundation for Scale

Unveiled in 2025, the EL platform was developed using more than 26 lakh kilometres of real-world field data. It represents a major evolution from Ather’s earlier architecture. Key changes include a move from expensive aluminium frames toward a more cost-effective unibody steel chassis, a simpler transmission and powertrain layout (including a swingarm-mounted motor), reduced component count, and greater manufacturing efficiency. Ather claims the design enables roughly 15% faster assembly and service intervals extended to 10,000 km, with periodic services up to twice as quick.The platform is modular and scalable. It can accommodate battery packs ranging from about 2 kWh to 5 kWh, supporting a family of scooters across different sizes and use cases—commuter, family and potentially sportier variants—while coexisting with the existing 450 and Rizta lines.

Factory 3.0: Built Around Konarc and EL

Central to this strategy is Ather’s new Factory 3.0 in the AURIC industrial zone at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad), Maharashtra. The facility is being developed in phases, with Phase 1 targeting an annual capacity of around 5 lakh units and full planned capacity reaching 10 lakh units. Higher vertical integration—battery pack assembly, electronics, transmission, painting and CED coating done in-house—is expected to improve unit economics and support the cost advantages of the EL platform.Commercial production timelines have seen some adjustment (originally targeted earlier, later guided toward later 2026), but the plant is designed specifically to scale EL-based products and serve growing demand, including in central and western India.

Konarc: Design, Positioning and Market Ambition

Konarc is set for its official debut on 29 August 2026 at Ather Community Day. Early teases and spy images show a practical family-scooter silhouette with a handlebar-mounted headlamp, wide horizontal LED daytime running light, long seat, 14-inch front and 12-inch rear wheels, and—significantly—metal body panels, a first for a production Ather scooter. This departs from the brand’s traditional plastic/composite panels and aligns with durability and mass-market expectations.

Expected pricing in the ₹1–1.25 lakh (ex-showroom) range would position it below the Rizta and 450 series, placing it in direct competition with high-volume rivals such as the TVS iQube, Bajaj Chetak and entry-level Ola models. Multiple battery/range options are anticipated, along with Ather’s software stack (including AtherStack updates), practical features focused on comfort, charging convenience, safety (such as advanced electronic braking elements on the platform) and lower maintenance costs.

By anchoring its new factory and EL architecture on Konarc, Ather is signalling a clear intent: retain its engineering and software strengths while expanding reach into the volume-driven mainstream. Success with this model could reshape the company’s scale, margins and market presence in India’s fast-growing electric two-wheeler segment. Full specifications, pricing, variants and delivery timelines are expected at the August 29 unveil.
