India’s electric vehicle market achieved a historic milestone in July 2026, with retail sales reaching an all-time high of 3.28 lakh units, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). The figure represents a sharp rise of more than 66 per cent compared to the same month last year and underscores the accelerating shift toward electrified mobility across the country. Nearly one in every eight vehicles retailed during the month was electric, pushing overall EV penetration to about 12.7 per cent from 9.6 per cent a year earlier.

The surge was broad-based, with every major EV segment recording strong year-on-year growth. Electric two-wheelers led the charge by crossing the two-lakh mark for the first time, registering 2,04,362 units—an increase of over 88 per cent from July 2025. Their market share climbed to a record 11.2 per cent, reflecting growing consumer preference for affordable and efficient electric options in the mass-mobility space

Electric three-wheelers further cemented their dominance, with sales rising 25.3 per cent to 87,055 units. The segment’s electric penetration reached 65.1 per cent, effectively making electric models the default choice rather than an alternative for buyers in this category. Commercial vehicle electrification also gathered significant momentum, as fleet operators moved beyond pilot projects to firm purchase orders. Electric commercial vehicle retail sales nearly tripled to 3,556 units, lifting the segment’s EV share to a record 3.57 per cent.

Passenger electric vehicle demand remained robust despite ongoing supply constraints on popular models. Retail volumes jumped 83 per cent year-on-year to 32,928 units. FADA Vice President Sai Giridhar noted that the performance across categories told a consistent story of deepening adoption. “Two-wheelers crossed the two-lakh mark for the first time, three-wheelers have made electric the default choice, commercial vehicles are witnessing fleet electrification, and passenger EV demand remains strong despite supply constraints,” he said.

The July numbers build on the previous monthly record set in June and come at a time when the broader automobile retail market itself posted healthy growth. With the festive season approaching, industry observers expect the positive momentum in EV sales to continue, provided manufacturers can address pending supply issues for high-demand models. The latest FADA data reinforces that India’s transition to electric mobility is no longer confined to niche segments but is steadily becoming a mainstream trend across two-wheelers, three-wheelers, commercial fleets and passenger cars.
