“We’ll build a car only if we have something new to offer,” says Ather Energy Co-founder and CEO Tarun Mehta, signalling a cautious and innovation-first approach as the company evaluates expansion beyond its successful electric scooter lineup.Speaking at the Rising Bharat Summit South Edition, Mehta told Moneycontrol Executive Editor (Technology & Startups) Chandra R. Srikanth that Ather has no immediate plans to jump into the passenger electric vehicle (EV) segment and risk becoming just another player in an already crowded field.

Mehta made it clear that Ather is not interested in entering the electric car market merely to add to the list of competitors. “We have no plans to become the 11th player,” he emphasised. He described the passenger EV business as a tough one with thin margins, even though some established players have found success. The two-wheeler EV specialist, known for its premium electric scooters like the Ather 450 series, is prioritising sustainable growth and product excellence over rapid diversification. Mehta stressed that any move into four-wheelers would be driven by a genuinely new idea or a differentiated product that stands out in the market, rather than following industry trends.

During the session, Mehta shared insights into Ather’s future product roadmap while discussing the broader landscape of India’s EV industry. The company, which has built a strong brand around performance, technology, and user experience in the scooter segment, intends to maintain that edge in any future category it enters.India’s EV sector has witnessed rapid growth, supported by government incentives and increasing consumer adoption. However, the four-wheeler segment remains capital-intensive with intense competition from both legacy automakers and new EV startups. Mehta’s remarks reflect a strategic maturity — choosing quality and differentiation over volume chasing.

Ather Energy has positioned itself as a technology-driven player focused on premium electric two-wheelers. By avoiding a rushed entry into cars, the company aims to protect its brand reputation and ensure that any new product aligns with its core philosophy of offering something meaningfully better to customers.Mehta’s comments come at a time when several Indian manufacturers are accelerating their electric passenger vehicle plans. His message underscores a key principle for long-term success in the EV space: innovation must lead the way, not just market opportunity. As India pushes towards its ambitious electric mobility targets, industry watchers will be keenly observing whether and when Ather translates its two-wheeler expertise into the four-wheeler arena — but only if it has something truly new to offer.
