Maruti Suzuki’s electric vehicle journey is beginning to gain traction in India as the eVitara steadily builds its presence in the country’s rapidly expanding EV market. While initial wholesale numbers appeared modest compared to expectations from India’s largest passenger vehicle manufacturer, a closer look at the sales data reveals a much healthier story. The company’s dispatches to dealerships have now crossed 9,000 units within the first six months of 2026, while customer registrations continue to rise, indicating improving retail demand.

Between January and May 2026, Maruti Suzuki dispatched 7,097 units of the eVitara to dealerships across India. During the same five-month period, the automaker exported nearly 36,000 units to more than 40 international markets, highlighting the model’s significance in Suzuki’s global electrification strategy. Export volumes were roughly five times higher than domestic wholesales, making the eVitara one of the company’s most export-focused products in recent years.

At first glance, the disparity between exports and domestic dispatches may suggest that the electric SUV has struggled to find buyers in India. However, the numbers tell a different story when examined more carefully. Maruti Suzuki appears to have prioritized export commitments during the initial production phase while simultaneously expanding its domestic sales network and preparing dealerships for higher EV volumes. This strategy is not unusual for manufacturers introducing a global product that caters to multiple markets.

The month-wise wholesale figures show that domestic supply improved significantly after launch. The company dispatched 528 units in January, followed by 870 units in February. Volumes then surged to 2,254 units in March, reflecting improved production and wider availability at dealerships. Dispatches remained strong at 2,006 units in April before easing to 1,439 units in May, likely due to inventory balancing and production allocation for export markets.

More importantly, retail registrations paint an encouraging picture of actual customer demand. Unlike wholesale dispatches, which represent vehicles sent to dealerships, registrations reflect vehicles purchased by customers. Registrations climbed steadily from around 224 units in January to approximately 1,658 units in May, indicating that more buyers were choosing the eVitara each month as availability improved and awareness increased.

The momentum continued in June 2026, when customer registrations reached another record of approximately 1,900 units. This suggests that dealership inventories accumulated during earlier months are gradually being converted into retail sales. As a result, the gap between wholesale dispatches and customer deliveries is narrowing, a positive sign for Maruti Suzuki’s first mass-market electric SUV.

With dispatches now crossing the 9,000-unit mark during the first six months of 2026, the eVitara is steadily establishing itself in the competitive electric SUV segment. The improving retail trend also indicates growing consumer confidence in Maruti Suzuki’s EV ecosystem, supported by the company’s extensive dealership network, expanding charging infrastructure partnerships, and strong brand recognition.

The coming months will be crucial for the eVitara as competition intensifies with new electric SUVs from Tata Motors, Mahindra, Hyundai, MG, Kia, and other manufacturers. Nevertheless, the consistent rise in retail registrations suggests that Maruti Suzuki’s gradual market-building strategy is beginning to pay off. If production continues to increase and dealership availability improves further, the eVitara could become one of India’s highest-volume electric SUVs in the second half of 2026.

Overall, while export volumes currently dominate the eVitara’s production mix, domestic demand is showing encouraging signs of acceleration. Rather than indicating weak market acceptance, the latest data suggests that Maruti Suzuki is successfully balancing global export commitments with a steadily growing customer base in India, laying a solid foundation for its long-term electric vehicle ambitions.
