Mahindra & Mahindra is actively evaluating multiple hybrid powertrain technologies for its upcoming SUVs, including range-extender electric vehicles (REVs) and strong hybrid systems, according to industry sources. This strategic move signals the company’s intent to adopt a more flexible, multi-pathway approach to electrification amid evolving customer preferences and market realities in India.
The development reflects a broader industry trend where automakers are moving beyond pure battery electric vehicles (BEVs) to offer a mix of electrified technologies. This allows them to cater to different use cases, infrastructure readiness, and price sensitivities across various SUV segments.
Mahindra had earlier set an ambitious target of 20-30% EV penetration in its portfolio by FY2028. To support this, the company committed more than USD 1 billion to its INGLO born-electric platform. The platform has already delivered three key models — the XEV 9e, BE 6, and XEV 9S — showcasing Mahindra’s strong capabilities in battery-electric architecture, design, and performance.
However, EVs contributed only around 9% of Mahindra’s total vehicle volumes in the last financial year. This gap between earlier projections and current market performance has prompted the company to accelerate development of hybrid and alternative electrified powertrains.
Range-extender EVs (which use a small internal combustion engine primarily to generate electricity for the battery) and strong hybrids (which can run on electric power alone for significant distances and offer seamless combined operation) are being studied for future SUV models. These technologies can deliver:
- Lower range anxiety compared to pure BEVs
- Better suitability for highway and inter-city travel
- Potentially more attractive pricing in mass-market SUV segments
- Compliance with evolving emission norms while offering improved fuel efficiency
By developing these options alongside its INGLO BEV platform, Mahindra aims to future-proof its portfolio as the Indian market progresses through different stages of electrification — from hybrids to full electrics — at varying speeds depending on geography, infrastructure, and government policies.
The Indian automotive industry is witnessing a phased shift toward greener mobility. While BEV adoption is growing rapidly in certain metros and premium segments, many buyers in smaller cities and for larger SUVs continue to prefer vehicles with familiar power delivery and widespread refuelling options.Mahindra’s exploration of hybrids is seen as a pragmatic step that allows it to maintain strong overall sales momentum while gradually scaling its pure EV business. The company is expected to deploy these new powertrains selectively across its popular SUV lines in the coming years.
This multi-technology strategy positions Mahindra to compete more effectively against rivals who are also expanding their hybrid and electrified offerings. It also provides customers with more choices as they transition to lower-emission vehicles at their own pace.
The exact timeline and specific models that will feature these hybrid powertrains are yet to be officially announced. Industry watchers will be closely monitoring Mahindra’s future product reveals for clearer indications of how the company plans to integrate these technologies into its growing SUV lineup.
