Kia India has kick-started development of the next-generation Sonet, with the first test mule of the upcoming compact SUV spotted on Indian roads. These spy images, which have surfaced online, mark the first public sighting of the second-generation model and give enthusiasts an early glimpse of what’s coming.

The current Kia Sonet, which received a facelift in early 2024, has been a strong performer in the highly competitive sub-compact SUV segment. The next-generation model (internally codenamed QY2E) is expected to launch in 2027. It will be built on a new, more advanced platform — likely the K1 architecture shared with the upcoming Kia Syros — promising improvements in structural rigidity, ride quality, interior space, and feature integration.

Spy shots suggest the next-gen Sonet will feature a complete design overhaul, with fresh styling cues in line with Kia’s latest “Opposites United” design philosophy. Expect bolder proportions, a more premium stance, and significantly upgraded interiors with larger dual screens and enhanced material quality.

One of the biggest highlights of the next-generation Sonet is the confirmation that Kia is developing a strong hybrid version. While the hybrid powertrain is unlikely to be available at the initial launch in 2027, it is expected to join the lineup around 2028–2029.This move aligns with Kia’s broader strategy to introduce hybrid options across its popular models in India, responding to growing demand for efficient yet practical electrified powertrains that offer better fuel economy without the range anxiety of pure EVs.

Alongside the hybrid, the new Sonet is expected to continue offering existing powertrain options, including:

  • 1.2-litre petrol
  • 1.0-litre turbo-petrol
  • 1.5-litre diesel

with manual and automatic transmission choices.

What to Expect from the New Sonet

  • Bigger & More Spacious Cabin: Improved rear legroom and boot space
  • Advanced Features: Larger dual displays, Level 2 ADAS, OTA updates, and premium comfort features
  • Better Safety: Enhanced platform and a stronger feature list
  • Modern Tech: Support for over-the-air updates and connected car technologies

The next-gen Sonet will face tough competition from the Tata Nexon, Maruti Brezza, Mahindra XUV 3XO, Skoda Kylaq, and Hyundai Venue. With its combination of stylish design, feature-loaded cabin, and the upcoming hybrid option, Kia aims to strengthen its position in one of India’s fastest-growing SUV segments.

More details and clearer spy images are expected to emerge in the coming months as testing intensifies. The next-generation Kia Sonet is shaping up to be a significant leap forward and could set a new benchmark when it arrives in 2027.
