India to Get Four New Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) SUVs in 2026-2027

India’s automotive market is set to witness a significant boost in plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) as several manufacturers prepare to introduce advanced models that combine the benefits of electric driving with the extended range of a petrol engine. PHEVs feature an internal combustion engine, electric motors, and a large battery pack. These vehicles can run purely on electric power for daily commutes until the battery depletes, after which the petrol engine seamlessly takes over to extend the driving range, eliminating range anxiety while delivering impressive fuel efficiency.

Here are the four new plug-in hybrid SUVs expected to arrive in India soon:

1. MG Project 520 (Based on Wuling Starlight 560) – Affordable Three-Row PHEV SUV

Codenamed Project 520, this upcoming MG SUV is based on the Wuling Starlight 560 and is expected to be one of the most accessible PHEV options in the market. Positioned as a practical three-row family SUV, it will rival models like the Mahindra XUV700 and Tata Safari.

The PHEV version is likely to use a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor, delivering a combined output of around 194 hp. It is expected to offer approximately 100 km of pure electric range and a total range exceeding 1,100 km with a full tank. Launch is anticipated around October 2026, with aggressive pricing that could make PHEV technology reachable for a wider audience.

2. JSW Motors Jetour T2 – Premium PHEV SUV

JSW Motors, in partnership with Chery, will launch the Jetour T2 as one of its first products in India. This rugged, boxy SUV carries a bold, adventure-ready design reminiscent of a mini Defender and is expected to target the premium segment, competing with the Toyota Fortuner.

The Jetour T2 PHEV uses a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine combined with dual electric motors and a 26.7 kWh battery pack. It promises up to 139 km of electric-only range (NEDC) and a combined system output of over 220 hp. The model is slated for launch around Diwali 2026 (September-October), with expected pricing in the ₹38-45 lakh range.

3. BYD Leopard 8 – High-Performance Hybrid Off-Roader

The BYD Leopard 8 is a full-size, luxurious and highly capable PHEV off-roader. Measuring over 5.2 metres in length, this flagship SUV from BYD’s premium lineup brings serious performance and presence. It features an extremely powerful hybrid powertrain with combined output reaching up to 748 PS and offers a total driving range of around 1,200 km. With its boxy design, advanced off-road capabilities, and luxury interior, the Leopard 8 is positioned as a high-end performer. BYD has already filed patents for the model in India, indicating strong interest in bringing it to the market.

4. BYD Sealion 6 – Practical Long-Range Plug-In Hybrid

The BYD Sealion 6 is a more practical and efficient PHEV SUV that uses BYD’s advanced DM-i hybrid technology. It pairs a 1.5-litre engine with a Blade Battery, offering strong efficiency and refinement.

Globally, it delivers up to 1,092 km of total range with around 80-90 km of pure electric driving. The Sealion 6 was showcased in India at the Auto Expo and has been spied testing, making it a strong contender for buyers seeking a balanced, family-friendly PHEV without compromising on comfort or efficiency.

With tightening CAFE norms and growing demand for greener yet practical vehicles, PHEVs offer the perfect middle ground — zero-emission capability for city driving and long-distance convenience without the need for frequent charging. These four launches signal that major players like MG (JSW MG), JSW Motors, and BYD are serious about expanding hybrid options in the Indian SUV market.

Most of these models are expected to hit showrooms in the second half of 2026, with more details on exact pricing, features, and specifications to be revealed closer to their launches.
