JSW-MG Starlight 560: India’s First SUV with Both PHEV and EV Powertrains

JSW MG Motor India is gearing up to introduce a significant new entrant in the country’s growing electrified SUV segment. The vehicle, internally known as Project 520, is based on the Wuling Starlight 560 and is poised to become one of the first mass-market SUVs in India to offer both plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and fully electric (EV) powertrain options.

In recent weeks, heavily camouflaged test mules of the Starlight 560 have been spotted multiple times on Indian roads, including instances of it charging, confirming active development and validation for local conditions. A design patent has also been filed in India without Wuling branding, indicating it will launch under the MG badge

The vehicle is expected to launch around October 2026 (festive season), though JSW-MG may choose a new name suited for the Indian market rather than retaining “Starlight 560.”

The Starlight 560 is a spacious three-row SUV measuring approximately 4,745 mm in length, 1,850 mm in width, and 1,755 mm in height, with a generous 2,810 mm wheelbase. This makes it a strong rival to models like the Mahindra XUV 7XO, Tata Safari, and other mid-to-large 6/7-seater SUVs. It will be offered in 5- and 7-seater configurations.

Design highlights include a modern SUV stance with split headlamps, a distinctive grille (closed for EV variants), skid plates, and dual-tone alloy wheels. The interior promises high space utilization (over 83% in global versions), flexible seating, and features like a large infotainment screen

What sets this MG apart is the dual electrified offering — a first for an SUV in this segment from a mainstream brand in India:

  • PHEV Version: A 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with a front-axle electric motor and a 20.5 kWh battery. Combined output is around 197 hp and 230 Nm. It offers up to 100-125 km of pure electric range (CLTC) and a total range exceeding 1,000 km. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h is claimed at about 9.7 seconds.
  • EV Version: Features a 56.7 kWh LFP battery with a front-mounted motor (around 136 hp). Expected range is up to 500 km (CLTC), with charging performance aligned to other MG EVs like the Windsor.

Priced likely in the ₹20-35 lakh range (ex-showroom, estimated), the Starlight 560 (or its Indian name) will target families seeking practicality, efficiency, and modern features. The PHEV variant could appeal to buyers wanting low running costs and the flexibility of petrol, while the EV targets those ready for full electrification.

This launch forms part of JSW-MG’s broader offensive, including models like the Majestor, aimed at strengthening its presence in the premium and new-energy vehicle segments.

With increasing demand for hybrids and EVs in India, coupled with government pushes for electrification, the Starlight 560 could play a pivotal role in MG’s strategy. As testing continues and the launch nears, enthusiasts and buyers alike will be watching closely for final specifications, pricing, and the official name reveal. This model has the potential to disrupt the 7-seater SUV space by offering genuine electrified options in a practical, feature-rich package.
