Tesla is gearing up for a significant expansion in the Indian EV market with the launch of the Model Y L tomorrow, April 22, 2026. This marks the company’s first new product introduction since it entered India with the standard Model Y in July 2025. The Model Y L is a long-wheelbase, six-seater variant designed specifically for family buyers who need extra space and practicality in a premium electric SUV.
The Model Y L is a long-wheelbase version of the Model Y. At 4,976 mm in length, 1,920 mm in width, and 1,668 mm in height, it is 186 mm longer and 44 mm taller, but just as wide. The wheelbase, at 3,040 mm, is 150 mm longer. These changes create a noticeably roomier cabin with a three-row, six-seat layout — a configuration that debuted in China last year and is now making its way to India via imports from Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory.
A crucial change worth noting in a country with poor roads like ours is that the laden ground clearance drops by 16 mm to just 122 mm. While the unladen clearance is higher (around 169 mm), the lower laden height could pose challenges on uneven Indian roads, speed breakers, and flooded streets — something prospective buyers will need to consider carefully, especially in cities and highways outside major metros.
The standard five-seat Model Y has seen relatively slow adoption since its launch, with reports suggesting only around 600 orders so far. The six-seater L variant aims to address this by appealing to larger Indian families who traditionally prefer spacious three-row SUVs. The extended wheelbase and extra length promise significantly more legroom in the second and third rows, along with better cargo flexibility — a key requirement for family haulers in India.
Tesla has scheduled a dedicated event for April 22, which is widely expected to be the official unveiling and launch of the Model Y L in the country. Pricing details are yet to be confirmed, but the vehicle is likely to command a premium over the regular Model Y due to its larger size, additional seating, and imported status (attracting higher duties).
Key Highlights at a Glance

With growing interest in electric SUVs among Indian buyers and increasing focus on family-oriented EVs, the Model Y L could give Tesla the much-needed boost in a market that has been cautious so far. Whether the lower ground clearance becomes a talking point or a deal-breaker remains to be seen once the first units hit Indian roads.
