Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL), a subsidiary of the Vedanta Group, has officially accelerated its journey toward carbon neutrality by launching a dedicated electric bus fleet at its Zinc Smelter Debari unit in Udaipur. This move signals a significant shift in the company’s logistics and employee transportation strategy, prioritizing sustainability over traditional fuel sources.
Scaling Green Mobility Across Rajasthan
The Debari launch is just the first step in a comprehensive regional rollout. Hindustan Zinc has outlined a strategic plan to deploy a total of 41 electric buses across its various operational hubs in Rajasthan. By replacing aging diesel-guzzling coaches with zero-emission alternatives, the company is addressing a critical component of its environmental footprint.
Targeting Scope 3 Emissions
While many industrial firms focus solely on direct operational emissions, HZL’s latest initiative specifically targets Scope 3 emissions.
- What are Scope 3 emissions? These are indirect emissions that occur in the value chain of the reporting company, including employee commuting and third-party transportation.
- The Impact: By decarbonizing the daily commute of its workforce, HZL is closing the loop on its sustainability goals and ensuring that its “green” philosophy extends beyond the factory floor.
Key Partnership and Environmental Impact
To bring this vision to life, Hindustan Zinc has partnered with Enviiiro Wheels Mobility Pvt. Ltd., an expert in sustainable transport solutions. This collaboration ensures a seamless transition to EV infrastructure and fleet management.
The projected environmental benefits are substantial:
- Total Emissions Avoided: Over 11,000 tonnes of $CO_2$ equivalent ($CO_2e$) emissions are expected to be offset over the duration of the contract.
- Health Benefits: The removal of diesel exhaust from local routes will contribute to better air quality for both employees and the surrounding Udaipur community.
A Leader in Sustainable Mining
This initiative aligns with Hindustan Zinc’s broader commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050 or sooner. As one of the world’s largest integrated producers of zinc, lead, and silver, HZL continues to set a benchmark for the mining industry—proving that heavy industry can indeed drive the charge toward a cleaner, greener future
