Mercedes-Benz is all set to expand its electric vehicle offerings in India with the upcoming launch of the all-new GLC Electric on November 4. The premium mid-size SUV will enter the fray in the 400 4Matic spec at launch, promising buyers an excellent blend of long range, stellar performance and cutting-edge EV tech from the brand’s latest electric vehicle architecture. Assembled locally in India, the model also marks one of the quickest rolls-outs of a global Mercedes-Benz vehicle in assembled form, as the company ramps up its focus on electrification in the country.
The GLC Electric 400 4Matic features a huge 94kWh battery pack at the core, enabling a WLTP-claimed range of up to 715 km on a single charge. Two electric motors, one mounted on each axle, enable all-wheel drive capability and generates a combined 490hp and 800Nm of torque. Weighing in at around 2.5 tonnes at the kerb, the SUV nevertheless can sprint from 0-100kph in a claimed 4.3 seconds and has a top speed of 210kph. The twin-motor powertrain is aided by an 800-volt architecture which allows for faster DC charging at up to 330kW, enabling the SUV to replenish its battery in a matter of minutes under optimal conditions.
Other highlights include the brand’s latest electric vehicle architecture which promises improved efficiency and everyday practicality, including a longer wheelbase than the combustion-engined GLC, a useful boot space and a frunk for the owners’ convenience. Inside the cabin, the GLC Electric is expected to flaunt Mercedes-Benz’s latest MBUX tech which includes a massive Hyperscreen display.
The decision to launch the standard-wheelbase GLC Electric instead of the long-wheelbase variant seems to have been made to balance out the familiar proportions and driving dynamics of the regular GLC with the benefits of a fully-electric powertrain. With bookings open to commence in early October, the November 4 launch of the GLC Electric will allow buyers to take possession of their new car in time for the festive season, with a chance to experience Mercedes-Benz’s next-gen electric SUV for themselves.
