Yamaha Enters India’s EV Scooter Segment with Launch of EC-06

Yamaha has officially entered India’s electric scooter arena with the launch of its debut model, the EC-06, priced at Rs 1,67,600 (ex-showroom, Delhi). This milestone signals the Japanese giant’s formal foray into the country’s booming EV two-wheeler segment, leveraging a strategic partnership with Bengaluru-based startup River Mobility.

The EC-06 is built on the same platform as the River Indie, sharing core hardware while receiving distinct Yamaha styling, packaging, and refinements to appeal to a premium urban audience. It will roll out initially in select cities—starting with Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu—exclusively through Yamaha’s upscale Blue Square dealership network, ensuring a focused, high-touch sales and service experience.

Yamaha EC-06: Powertrain, Performance, and Practicality

At the heart of the EC-06 lies an Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM) delivering 6.7 kW peak power and 26 Nm of torque, paired with a fixed 4 kWh battery pack. This setup propels the scooter to a top speed of 79 km/h—slightly lower than the Indie’s figure—while prioritizing smooth, efficient city riding.

Charging is straightforward: plug it into a standard household socket for a full charge in approximately eight hours (0-100%), with no fast-charging option mentioned. The claimed IDC-certified range stands at 169 km on a single charge, comfortably covering daily commutes, errands, and short interurban trips for most users.Practical touches include 24.5 liters of underseat storage (adequate for helmets and small groceries), a kerb weight around 132 kg (light enough for easy maneuverability), and features like LED lighting, three riding modes, and smart connectivity tailored for tech-savvy riders.

Positioning and Market Context

Priced at Rs 1,67,600 ex-showroom, the EC-06 sits roughly Rs 22,000 above the River Indie (on which it is based), reflecting Yamaha’s premium branding, sharper design cues (including more conventional headlamp and tail-light styling), and the trust factor of the iconic blue-and-white badge. It positions itself as a refined, design-forward alternative in a crowded segment dominated by players like Ather 450X, Ola S1 Pro, TVS iQube, Bajaj Chetak, and the original River Indie.

This launch comes at a time when electric scooters are gaining traction for their low running costs, zero tailpipe emissions, and growing charging infrastructure. Yamaha’s entry—after years of observation—brings the brand’s reputation for reliability, build quality, and engaging ride dynamics to the EV space, potentially attracting buyers who value heritage alongside electrification.

Deliveries are expected to commence soon following the February 2026 launch announcement, with Yamaha hinting at further EV expansions (including models like the Aerox E) in the pipeline. For now, the EC-06 marks a confident first step, blending proven underpinnings with Yamaha’s signature polish to carve out space in India’s competitive electric scooter landscape.
