Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast has taken a significant step toward entering India’s booming electric two-wheeler market. The company has filed a design patent for a new electric scooter in India, sparking speculation that an updated version of its popular Viper model could soon arrive in the country.

While VinFast has not yet officially revealed the identity of the scooter, patent images strongly suggest it is a refreshed iteration of the Viper currently sold in Vietnam. The design patent, filed under the name VinFast Trading and Production Joint Stock Company, indicates active preparations for a potential launch in the Indian market.

The patent images showcase a sharper and more contemporary aesthetic compared to the existing Viper. Key visual updates include:

  • New LED headlights with integrated Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) for improved visibility and a premium front-end look.
  • Redesigned body panels that give the scooter a sleeker profile.
  • A revised front fender.
  • An updated LED tail lamp that enhances the rear styling.

Despite these modern touches, the scooter maintains its practical “tall-boy” stance, which offers good ground clearance and road presence. It also retains a spacious flat floorboard for comfortable rider and pillion foot placement, along with 14-inch alloy wheels that contribute to stable handling

If the patented design is indeed based on the current VinFast Viper, it is likely to carry over similar mechanical specifications with possible India-specific tweaks. The Viper in Vietnam features a 3 kW BLDC hub motor capable of a top speed of around 70 km/h. It supports a dual-battery setup (swappable LFP batteries), delivering a combined claimed range of over 150 km under standard testing conditions.

Other expected features include:

  • A TFT digital display.
  • Smart key and keyless entry system.
  • Generous front storage compartments.
  • USB charging ports.

These elements position the scooter as a practical yet stylish option for urban commuting.

VinFast has already established a presence in India with local manufacturing of its electric cars in Tamil Nadu. The design patent for this scooter signals the company’s intent to expand into the highly competitive electric scooter segment, where it could challenge established players like Ola Electric, Ather Energy, and TVS iQube.

India’s electric two-wheeler market is growing rapidly, driven by government incentives, improving charging infrastructure, and rising demand for sustainable mobility. A VinFast entry could bring fresh competition, advanced battery-swapping technology, and global design sensibilities to the segment.

No official launch timeline or pricing has been announced yet, but industry observers expect developments in the coming months, potentially with a debut by late 2026 or early 2027.
