Toyota is gearing up to enter the electric vehicle segment in India with the Urban Cruiser BEV, a compact electric SUV that shares its platform with the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara. This collaboration between Toyota and Suzuki marks Toyota’s first mass-market EV in the country, positioned below the larger bZ4X in the lineup.
The Urban Cruiser BEV made its global debut in late 2024, with a public showcase at the Brussels Motor Show in early 2025. It recently went on sale in Indonesia as a completely built-up (CBU) import, priced at IDR 759 million (approximately Rs 40.78 lakh). In contrast, the Indian version will be locally produced at Suzuki’s Gujarat plant, promising a more competitive price tag.
India Launch and Pricing Expectations
The Toyota Urban Cruiser BEV is expected to launch in India in the first half of 2026, potentially as early as February. It will be Toyota’s maiden electric offering in the mass-market segment, following the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara, which is slated for launch soon. Local production should help keep prices in the Rs 20-30 lakh range (ex-showroom), making it a direct rival to models like the Tata Curvv EV, MG ZS EV, Hyundai Creta Electric, and Mahindra BE.6.
Platform and SpecificationsBuilt on the dedicated Heartect-e EV skateboard platform co-developed by Suzuki and Toyota, the Urban Cruiser BEV prioritizes space, structural rigidity, and battery integration. It measures around 4,285 mm in length with a 2,700 mm wheelbase, offering ample interior room for a five-seater.Key powertrain options include:
- 49 kWh LFP battery pack (FWD only): Around 142-144 hp and 189 Nm torque.
- 61.1 kWh LFP battery pack: Up to 172-174 hp and 192 Nm in FWD, or 184 hp and 300 Nm in AWD configuration.
Claimed range varies by market and configuration, with figures up to 400-550 km depending on the battery and drivetrain. In Indonesia, the 61.1 kWh variant offers around 427 km.Like its larger sibling, the bZ4X, it features Toyota’s T Intouch connected car suite, allowing remote monitoring of vehicle stats, location, and other functions via a smartphone app.
Design and Features
The Urban Cruiser BEV sports a robust SUV stance with Toyota’s signature “hammerhead” front design, LED lighting, aerodynamic wheels, and a closed-off grille. It differentiates itself from the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara with unique styling cues while sharing much of the interior layout, including dual digital screens (10.1-inch driver display and 10.25-inch infotainment), sliding rear seats, and modern connectivity.
As India’s EV market heats up, the Urban Cruiser BEV represents Toyota’s strategic push into electrification through its partnership with Suzuki. With local manufacturing, competitive pricing, and proven Toyota reliability, it could appeal to buyers seeking a practical, feature-rich electric SUV. Stay tuned for official details as the launch approaches – this could be a game-changer in the affordable EV space!
