Electric three-wheelers recorded the highest retail sales in India in August, with battery-powered vehicles claiming a sizeable majority of the market share. Electric vehicles comprised 65.30 percent of the 3 Wheeler segment in terms of retail sales volume in August, up slightly compared to 65.07 percent in July and significantly compared to 56.63 percent in the same period last year. As a result, battery-powered vehicles are quickly overtaking their traditional counterparts in this high-volume 3 Wheeler segment.

Electric passenger rickshaws were the most popular type of 3 Wheeler, with 28,816 units sold in India in August. Compared to 36,957 in the same period last year, this was a reduction of 22.03 percent. Rickshaw-type EVs with carts came next in terms of popularity, with 6,029 units sold in August 2026 compared to 6,214 a year earlier, for a decrease of 2.98 percent. Thus, while overall electric 3 Wheeler sales were robust compared to 2025, most categories saw a decrease compared to 2025.

Compared to 65.30 percent for electric vehicles, alternative fuel 3 Wheelers – Natural Gas (CNG/LPG) came in at 21.50 percent for retail sales in August. Diesel accounted for 12.89 percent of retail sales, while petrol and ethanol accounted for just 0.31 percent. As a result, battery-powered 3 Wheelers are quickly overtaking their traditional combustion engine rivals in terms of market share.

The record-breaking sales of electric 3 Wheelers come at a time when many businesses and private buyers are being drawn to the cheaper operating costs and improved performance of electric cars. The rising popularity of electric 3-wheelers is expected to continue in the coming years since the market provides a wide range of choices, and there is a growing emphasis on battery innovation and charging station construction. While the growth rate slowed compared to 2025, the overall rise in both retail and wholesale sales suggests that electric 3-wheelers will continue to be the preferred choice for many over internal combustion variants.

It will be interesting to see if electric 3-wheelers retain their popularity, seeing as how the 65.30 percent share is an astonishing figure for any vehicle category. EV producers and dealers are anticipated to accelerate their R&D and sales operations throughout the next few years in order to meet demand. Thus, the market dominance of electric 3-wheelers in terms of retail sales appears to be anything but ephemeral, as manufacturers and consumers alike grow more receptive to the transition.
