A real-world example of the Tesla Model Y RWD with an LFP battery’s exceptional efficiency came from a drive by owner Samir Parakh from Mumbai to Ahmedabad. The 509.9 km route contained a mixture of city driving in Mumbai and Ahmedabad as well as sections of highway, and the Model Y managed to drive beyond its WLTP-rated range figure. This WLTP figure is a standardized range figure achieved under specific conditions, so this drive’s result being better than the figure is a notable achievement.
The Model Y managed to reach an impressive efficiency of 110.4 Wh/km, which is the equivalent of 9.06 km/kWh, using 98 percent of the battery’s state of charge. The highway sections were driven at around 95 km/h using Tesla’s Traffic-Aware Cruise Control while the air conditioner was set to a comfortable 22 degrees Celsius. Keeping the speed steady with the driver-assistance systems and the moderate use of the air conditioner contributed to this impressive efficiency figure. A small top-up charge was taken at the Delight Food Joint JioBP 60 kW charger before taking the NE4 expressway.
The drive began with the battery at 98 percent state of charge and the car’s own trip computer predicted arriving at nearly 0 percent. According to the drive, if the drive had not taken that short top-up charge, it would have been correct with the prediction of the remaining charge. The city sections at both ends add to the credibility of this drive’s figures. These sections usually involve more stop-and-go driving with a lower average speed and the use of the air conditioner more often, contributing to a higher energy consumption.
The Model Y was still able to manage to achieve figures allowing it to comfortably drive beyond the WLTP-rated range figure. This Mumbai-Ahmedabad drive is a great showcase of the Tesla Model Y RWD LFP’s capabilities for intercity driving in India. It was able to comfortably drive beyond 500 km while also having to use the city sections at both ends. Driving at a steady speed on the highways allowed for an impressive efficiency to be achieved.
This will put potential owners’ minds at ease regarding long-haul driving in the Model Y, and the WLTP range figures will serve as a good indicator of achievable ranges in India. As more owners continue to provide their long-distance experiences, the Model Y’s reputation for being efficient and predictable with its ranges will continue to grow. Parakh’s drive will serve as another data point for potential owners weighing the Model Y for long-haul highway driving between major cities in India.
