Tesla Model Y Cheaper in Delhi Than Mumbai: Variant-Wise On-Road Prices, EMI, Colours, Booking Amount

After years of speculation and stalled negotiations, Tesla has officially entered the Indian market. The company has made its Indian debut with the Model Y, which goes against the likes of the BYD Sealion 7 and BMW iX1. The EV-maker has also inaugurated its first-ever dealership in Mumbai’s BKC district, signalling a fresh start for its India ambitions. The Model Y is being imported from the Shanghai facility, and it will retail in only two cities for now – Delhi and Mumbai. Interestingly, the Model Y is cheaper in Delhi than Mumbai. But what’s the exact quantum of difference between the prices, and what will be the EMI? Let’s find that out in a read.

The Tesla Model Y is available in two variants: the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) and the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive (LR RWD). Both are imported as Completely Built Units (CBUs) from Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai, attracting import duties that push the pricing into the premium segment. The base ex-showroom price starts at ₹59.89 lakh for the RWD variant, while the LR RWD is priced at ₹67.89 lakh (ex-showroom, pan-India). These prices include the base Stealth Grey color and standard all-black interior. However, on-road prices vary slightly between Delhi and Mumbai due to differences in road tax and registration fees—Delhi benefits from EV-friendly policies with lower or nil road tax compared to Mumbai’s structure.

Tesla Model Y RWD On-Road Prices: Delhi Vs Mumbai

The RWD variant offers a WLTP-claimed range of 500 km, a top speed of 201 km/h, and 0-100 km/h acceleration in 5.9 seconds. It’s powered by a single rear motor with a 60 kWh battery pack. Here’s the variant-wise on-road breakdown (including ex-showroom, RTO, insurance, and other charges, but excluding optional extras):

*Note: Optional colors add ₹95,000 for Pearl White Multi-Coat and Diamond Black, ₹1.25 lakh for Glacier Blue, and ₹1.85 lakh for Quicksilver and Ultra Red. These premiums are consistent across cities and are added to the base ex-showroom price before on-road calculations.

Tesla Model Y Long Range RWD On-Road Prices: Delhi Vs Mumbai

The LR RWD variant steps up with a larger 75 kWh battery, offering a WLTP-claimed range of 622 km, the same top speed of 201 km/h, and quicker 0-100 km/h in 5.6 seconds. It’s ideal for longer drives and highway commuters.

Color OptionDelhi (₹)Mumbai (₹)Difference (₹)
Stealth Grey (Standard)69,14,69069,15,590900

Ultra Red71,01,54071,02,440900

The slight price edge in Delhi (typically ₹500-₹900 lower) stems from Delhi’s exemption or reduction in road tax for EVs under local policies, while Mumbai applies a nominal road tax (around 4-6% for luxury vehicles). Insurance and FASTag fees are similar across both cities, adding about ₹2.3-2.9 lakh depending on the variant. All prices are ex-showroom Mumbai/Delhi with PM E-DRIVE subsidies applied where eligible, but actual costs may vary based on final registration and dealer fees. Tesla also offers a Black and White interior option for an additional ₹95,000.

Tesla Model Y: EMI, Downpayment, Booking Amount

If you’re planning to buy the Tesla Model Y in Delhi through an auto loan, the monthly EMI for the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) variant works out to Rs 1,14,088, while the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive version demands a slightly higher EMI of Rs 1,29,184. These figures are based on a loan structure involving a Rs 6,10,669 down payment (approximately 10% of on-road price), a 60-month tenure, and an interest rate of 9% APR. The total on-road purchase price for the RWD variant stands at Rs 61,06,690.For Mumbai, EMIs would be marginally higher due to the elevated on-road price—expect around Rs 1,14,130 for RWD and Rs 1,29,220 for LR RWD under similar terms. Downpayments can vary by lender (typically 10-20% of on-road price), and interest rates range from 8.5-10.5% depending on credit score and bank (e.g., HDFC, ICICI, or SBI). Tesla partners with select financiers for seamless approvals, and buyers can use the official website’s EMI calculator for personalized quotes. Opting for a shorter tenure (e.g., 36 months) increases EMI but reduces total interest paid.

As of now, the Model Y can be booked against a token amount of Rs 22,220 (non-refundable, including TCS). This secures your order online via Tesla’s India website, with an additional Rs 3 lakh due within seven days to confirm. Bookings are open pan-India, but deliveries prioritize Mumbai, Delhi, Gurugram, and Pune starting Q3 2025. Full Self-Driving (FSD) capability, an optional ₹6 lakh add-on, requires regulatory approval but will be enabled via OTA updates once cleared.

India’s EV ecosystem is evolving rapidly, and Tesla’s entry with the Model Y marks a premium milestone. Whether you’re eyeing the efficient RWD for city commutes or the long-range for road trips, the slight Delhi advantage makes it a smart buy there.
