Tata Motors is accelerating its electric vehicle offensive as part of a broader strategy to expand its passenger vehicle portfolio significantly by FY2031. The company plans to add six new models (including ICE and EV variants) and over 30 refreshes, facelifts, and derivatives, aiming for EVs to contribute 30%+ of its passenger vehicle sales (around 350,000–400,000 annual units).
Two of the most anticipated electric models are the Tata Safari EV (a three-row flagship) and the premium Avinya EV series.
Tata Safari EV: Flagship Three-Row Electric SUV
Launch Timeline: Tata is targeting a festive season launch (Diwali 2026, around October–November). Production is expected to begin in August 2026.
Platform & Powertrain: The Safari EV will heavily borrow from the recently launched Harrier EV. It will use the acti.ev+ platform, sharing powertrain, battery options, and much of the technology. This speeds up development while ensuring proven reliability.
Battery & Range:
- Expected battery options: 65 kWh and 75 kWh LFP packs (some reports mention a possible larger ~80 kWh variant).
- Claimed range: Up to 600 km (MIDC) on higher variants, with real-world expectations around 500+ km.
- The larger, heavier three-row body may result in slightly lower range figures than the Harrier EV (which claims up to 627 km).

- Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) and All-Wheel Drive (AWD/Quad-Wheel Drive) options.
- AWD dual-motor setup could deliver around 300–390 bhp and strong torque for confident performance.

Tata Avinya EV: Premium Electric Lineup
Launch Timeline: The first Avinya model (likely the Avinya X) is slated for a 2027 debut. Engineering prototypes are expected later in 2026.
Platform & Architecture:
- Significant update: Avinya EVs will use a platform derived from the Chery-JLR Freelander architecture (instead of the originally planned JLR EMA).
- Key highlight: 800V electrical architecture, enabling ultra-fast charging (up to 350 kW in some configurations) and superior efficiency.
Battery & Range:
- Expected battery packs: 65–80 kWh range (sourced from Tata’s battery arm, Agratas).
- The 800V system supports rapid charging and extended range, with focus on premium efficiency and performance.
Positioning:
- Avinya will be Tata’s premium EV sub-brand, emphasizing futuristic design, luxury, advanced software, and sustainability.
- It will sit at the top of Tata’s EV portfolio, targeting higher price segments (potentially ₹45–60 lakh+ for initial models) with global ambitions. Production is planned at the new Panapakkam (Tamil Nadu) facility.
Tata’s Long-Term EV Strategy
These launches form part of Tata’s push to grow its EV portfolio from 6 to 10 models by FY2031. Alongside the Safari EV and Avinya, other upcoming EVs may include derivatives or an electric MPV. The company is investing heavily in localisation, next-gen batteries (higher energy density, faster charging), and scalable platforms to achieve cost parity and profitability even after incentives.
