Suzuki Jimny EV Prototype Spotted Testing in Snow; Electric Off-Roader Incoming?

A camouflaged Suzuki Jimny prototype has been spotted undergoing rigorous cold-weather testing in snowy conditions, sparking strong speculation that the iconic off-roader is heading towards full electrification. This development comes as a surprise, given Suzuki’s earlier statements ruling out a battery-electric Jimny.

The heavily camouflaged test mules were photographed navigating snow-covered roads. Key visual indicators pointing towards an electric powertrain include:

  • Blanked-off front grille — a common trait in EVs to optimise aerodynamics and cooling
  • No visible exhaust tailpipe
  • Overall proportions similar to the current Jimny

Notably, the prototype appears to retain the solid front axle of the petrol-powered Jimny, suggesting Suzuki is determined to preserve the model’s legendary off-road capability even in its electric form. The test vehicle was seen running alongside another camouflaged Jimny-style prototype, likely for comparative development in low-grip conditions.

Suzuki had previously dismissed the idea of an electric Jimny. In late 2024, company president Toshihiro Suzuki stated that the added weight of batteries and motors would “ruin” the lightweight character that makes the Jimny special. However, these fresh sightings indicate the company may have reversed course, possibly to meet stricter emissions regulations in key markets like Europe, where the current ICE Jimny faces sales restrictions.

An electric Jimny could also open doors for the model’s return to Europe while maintaining its cult status among off-road enthusiasts.

While Suzuki has not officially confirmed the project, industry speculation suggests:

  • Dual-motor All-Wheel Drive setup for true off-road performance with instant torque
  • Battery size likely in the 40–60 kWh range (drawing from Suzuki’s e-Vitara technology)
  • Expected real-world range of 300–400 km
  • Preservation of ladder-frame construction and low-range capabilities

The Jimny EV is expected to carry forward the boxy, retro design DNA that has made the model a global icon.

No official launch timeline has been announced. Based on current development sightings, a potential debut could happen between 2027 and 2029, with India (as Maruti Suzuki Jimny EV) possibly following later. Pricing estimates for India hover around ₹18 lakh (ex-showroom), though this remains speculative.

This prototype aligns with Suzuki’s broader electrification strategy, which already includes the e-Vitara. A Jimny EV would add a fun, capable, and emotionally appealing product to the lineup. For now, the sighting remains unconfirmed by Suzuki. The company is yet to issue any statement on the electric Jimny project.
