In a major development for India’s burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) industry, Solterra Technologies has announced an exclusive partnership with Taiwan-based power electronics specialist Sinpro Electronics. The company has also opened a Research and Development (R&D) facility in Bengaluru to support the development of locally-adapted products for the Indian market. The developments are sure to prop up the company, which is at the forefront of the power electronics space, as demand for components gathers pace, and for two-wheelers, three-wheelers and four-wheelers alike.
Under the deal, Solterra Technologies will distribute Sinpro’s range of EV motors, motor controllers and DC-DC converters in the Indian market to manufacturers and mobility companies. The partnership is a strategic one, with both firms highlighting the value of the collaboration between Sinpro’s global expertise in power electronics and Solterra’s understanding of the local market to quicken the adoption of the former’s technologies in India. Both firms believe that close technical collaboration will enable the development of products that meet the demands of the domestic ecosystem.
The newly launched Bengaluru R&D office will support product development, engineering, testing and technology customisation to support the R&D efforts of Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and engineering partners. The office, located in one of India’s premier technology hubs, is expected to provide deep technical engagement with partners and support the adaptation of powertrain components to local conditions. In addition to supporting the development of components, the office will also support the company’s work in chargers, power modules and associated systems. Executives said the office will be crucial to bolstering in-house R&D capabilities and reduce the company’s reliance on foreign technologies.
Founded in 2022, Solterra Technologies has carved out a niche for itself with its range of IP67-rated EV chargers and power electronics products, all of which are tailored to Indian duty cycles. With the deal, the company will be able to offer components that go beyond its current product suite – and offer a more complete solution to India’s EV manufacturers. Sinpro, for its part, believes India to be one of the most promising markets for EVs and has chosen to partner exclusively with Solterra due to its local presence and engineering expertise.
The partnership and the opening of the Bengaluru R&D office in tandem are indicative of the company’s strategy of balancing its global technology partnerships with local R&D. As India’s EV industry matures, and the focus turns to performance, reliability and engineering, initiatives such as these will be critical in plugging the gap between foreign technologies and the needs of domestic manufacturers.
