In a move that blends melody with modernity, acclaimed music maestro Shankar Mahadevan has joined the ranks of eco-conscious celebrities by acquiring the MG M9, a premium seven-seater electric MPV. Priced at a starting ex-showroom tag of Rs 69.90 lakh in India, this luxurious vehicle recently hit the market, positioning itself as a “Presidential Limousine” in JSW MG Motor India’s ultra-luxury SELECT portfolio.
The purchase follows in the footsteps of veteran Bollywood actor and BJP leader Hema Malini, who was among the first high-profile owners, underscoring the MPV’s appeal among India’s elite for its blend of opulence and zero-emission performance.
Shankar, known for timeless hits like “Breathless” and his versatile contributions to Bollywood soundtracks, shared the exciting update on Instagram, captivating his followers with a heartfelt video of the delivery ceremony. The clip captures a joyous family moment: Shankar and his wife, Bhavana, reclining luxuriously in the rear seats, savoring the plush comfort, while their children eagerly fiddle with the high-tech infotainment from the front, guided by an enthusiastic MG representative. The scene radiates warmth and wonder, perfectly encapsulating the MPV’s family-oriented ethos.
Opting for the striking Metal Black exterior, Shankar’s choice adds a sleek, sophisticated edge to the vehicle’s bold silhouette.
The MG M9 is also available in elegant variants like Pearl White with a Black Roof and Concrete Grey with a Black Roof, allowing buyers to personalize their ride. Measuring over 5 meters in length, the MPV boasts a contemporary boxy design with a commanding front fascia. Highlights include a trapezoidal mesh grille, split LED headlights, and interconnected daytime running lights (DRLs) that lend it an aggressive yet refined presence. Flanked by 19-inch alloy wheels, it exudes premium poise on the road.
Step inside, and the MG M9 elevates luxury to new heights, making it an ideal companion for long journeys or family escapades—qualities that likely resonated with the peripatetic musician. The cabin features 16-way power-adjustable seats across configurations (7- or 8-seater layouts), complete with eight massage modes, heating, ventilation, and even fold-out ottoman supports for ultimate relaxation.
A yacht-inspired dual sunroof floods the space with natural light, complemented by 64-color ambient lighting for customizable moods. Entertainment is paramount, courtesy of a 13-speaker Infinity audio system with a subwoofer and amplifier—perfect for Shankar to hum along to his own compositions. Rear passengers get dedicated entertainment screens, while powered sliding doors and a panoramic glass roof enhance accessibility and openness. Under the hood, the MG M9 is powered by a 90 kWh lithium-ion battery paired with a front-mounted electric motor churning out 245 hp and 350 Nm of torque. It promises an impressive claimed range of up to 548 km on a single charge (ARAI-certified), with a WLTP figure of around 430 km, making it suitable for inter-city drives without range anxiety.
Safety is equally robust, with Level-2 ADAS including adaptive cruise control, forward collision avoidance, multiple airbags, a 360-degree camera, and all-disc brakes. Shankar’s acquisition not only bolsters his enviable garage but also signals a growing trend among Indian celebrities—like cricketer KL Rahul—towards sustainable mobility without compromising on extravagance.
As electric vehicles continue to redefine luxury in India, the MG M9 stands out as a harmonious fusion of comfort, technology, and environmental responsibility—much like the maestro’s own eclectic discography.
