Renault India has announced that the Duster strong-hybrid will be launched on October 17, 2026, adding a third powertrain option for the midsize SUV. The E-Tech hybrid petrol engine, based on Renault’s expertise in Formula 1, aims to deliver excellent fuel efficiency across the range while maintaining strong performance. The pricing for the hybrid variant will also be revealed on this day, rounding off the Duster’s powertrain portfolio that also includes 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engines.
E-Tech Strong Hybrid Powertrain Details
The Duster Hybrid is equipped with Renault’s E-Tech 160 strong-hybrid system, which utilises a naturally aspirated 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine in conjunction with two electric motors and a 1.4 kWh battery pack. One of the two motors is used to exclusively generate electricity, while the other drives the wheels, producing a combined output of around 160 hp and 172 Nm of torque. The powertrain is connected to a multi-mode automatic transmission, known as an eight-speed dedicated hybrid gearbox, that allows for seamless switching between electric, hybrid and engine-driven modes. Renault claims that the system can operate in electric mode for up to 80 percent of the time in normal urban driving conditions, reducing overall fuel consumption by up to 40 percent compared with a pure internal-combustion engine vehicle. A combined driving range of around 1,000 km has also been highlighted, making the hybrid a viable alternative for urban commuting as well as long-distance travel.
The self-charging hybrid technology does not require a dedicated plug and provides the efficiency usually associated with diesel engines that the new generation Duster does not possess. The promotional messaging of Renault for the launch itself even appears to address diesel directly, indicating that E-Tech is intended to fill the gap in this segment for the Duster.
Market Positioning and Demand
The hybrid Duster will directly compete with strong-hybrid contenders such as the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Maruti Victoris in the popular midsize SUV segment. Interest in the E-Tech powertrain has already been notable. At the time of the initial India launch of the Duster earlier this year, Renault stated that almost 40 percent of bookings in major metro markets were for the hybrid variant. Capacity for production in 2026 was fully booked, and the company is currently working on ramping up production to meet demand before the October deliveries.What Buyers Can Expect
