Two years after its launch on Indian roads the MG Windsor EV has quietly redefined the electric mobility landscape of the country. It has become the preferred choice for more than 80,000 families who have cherished memories connected to the two-wheel drive vehicle whether it was on a daily commute or a weekend getaway. To celebrate the achievement and to mark the anniversary from a very different vantage point, MG India arranged a special drive for the members of the MG Car Club. They embarked on a drive from Mumbai to Sula, marking a symbolic journey as they left the traffic of Mumbai behind and headed towards the vineyards of Sula.
The drive was a meaningful activity for the car club members who were the first owners of the Windsor EV who helped grow the model beyond the initial hype and created a community around the vehicle that continues to thrive. On the roadsters, conversations revolved around the meteoric rise of the EV as a preferred choice of transportation for car owners in the country. What began as a disruptive force with a novel Battery-as-a-Service proposition and an affordable electric crossover has transformed into one of the most popular EVs in the country. The Windsor EV with its seating capacity and lounge seating appeal continues to attract buyers who wish to make the switch to electric but are unsure about giving up their family SUV. It is perhaps one of the few cars in the country that has achieved such an impressive feat with an almost 80,000 family households owning the vehicle.
The car owners spoke about a shift in perception for them as buyers from when they first purchased the vehicle. While buyers used to calculate the distance before embarking on a trip with their EV, the home-charging capability of the Windsor EV combined with an intuitive quick acceleration has enhanced their experience on the road. The buyers also spoke about the appeal of the vehicle’s interior space that allows them to embark on adventures with their kids or enjoy school holidays with ease and comfort. The sheer number of these owners and their feedback has enhanced the reputation of the vehicle in the segment, which complements its stellar sales numbers.
The drive from Mumbai to Sula was symbolic of the emotional connect that owners feel towards the vehicle and its role in their lives. In celebrating the second anniversary of the car, MG placed owners at the heart of the celebration and highlighted their contribution towards the Windsor EV’s journey in India. As the vehicle moves towards its third year on Indian roads, it will be interesting to see if its focus on building a community around the car enables it to continue to dominate the electric car segment while encouraging more people to switch to electric mobility.
