JSW MG Motor India has announced that its popular electric crossover, the MG Windsor EV, has surpassed a significant 65,000-unit cumulative sales milestone in the domestic market. Launched in October 2024, the model has quickly become one of India’s top-selling electric vehicles, demonstrating strong customer acceptance across diverse regions.
Particularly noteworthy is the sales pattern: over 70% of total Windsor EV volumes have come from non-metro markets. Major urban centres such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai together account for only about 30% of sales, with the remaining demand driven by buyers in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities and towns. This trend highlights the growing appeal of electric vehicles beyond traditional metropolitan areas, aided by practical ownership solutions and rising awareness of EV benefits.
Two Battery Options for Varied Needs
The MG Windsor EV is offered with two battery pack choices to cater to different customer requirements:
- Standard variant: 38 kWh battery delivering a claimed range of up to 332 km (MIDC certified).
- Pro variant: Larger 52.9 kWh battery providing an impressive claimed range of up to 449 km on a single charge.
Both variants are powered by the same front-wheel-drive electric motor producing 136 hp (100 kW) and 200 Nm of torque, ensuring peppy performance suitable for daily commutes and highway drives alike. The Pro variant offers greater peace of mind for longer journeys while maintaining the same power output.
The model also supports flexible ownership through the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) option, which significantly lowers the upfront cost. It starts at around ₹9.99 lakh (ex-showroom) plus a battery rental of approximately ₹3.9 per km (rates may vary slightly by battery size). This innovative approach has played a key role in making the Windsor EV accessible to a broader audience, including first-time EV buyers in smaller cities.
Packed with Modern Features
The Windsor EV stands out as an “Intelligent CUV” with a spacious, feature-rich cabin designed for comfort and convenience:
- Large panoramic glass roof, dual-tone ivory interiors, and ambient lighting for a premium feel.
- Advanced infotainment with a 15.6-inch touchscreen, 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and a 9-speaker Infinity audio system.
- Comfort features including ventilated front seats, powered driver seat, rear AC vents, wireless phone charging, and a powered tailgate.
- Practicality with generous boot space (around 579–604 litres) and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability for powering external devices.
- Safety equipment comprising six airbags, 360-degree camera, Level-2 ADAS (in higher variants), ESC, all-disc brakes, and more.
Charging is convenient with support for 7.4 kW AC (full charge in ~7–9.5 hours depending on battery) and DC fast charging (20–80% in about 45–50 minutes).Additional owner-friendly policies include a lifetime battery warranty for the first owner and an assured buyback plan, which further build confidence in long-term EV ownership.
Driving EV Adoption Beyond Metros
The strong non-metro performance of the Windsor EV signals a maturing Indian EV market. Factors such as lower running costs (especially with BaaS), improving charging infrastructure in smaller cities, and the vehicle’s practical design—offering car-like comfort in a crossover body—have resonated well with buyers outside major metros.
JSW MG Motor India continues to expand its New Energy Vehicle portfolio, with plans for more models in the coming years. The rapid rise of the Windsor EV to over 65,000 units in roughly 17–18 months underscores the potential for mass-market EVs in India when priced accessibly and equipped thoughtfully.
With its flexible battery options, generous range (up to 449 km), and extensive feature list, the MG Windsor EV is well-positioned to sustain its momentum and accelerate the shift toward electric mobility across the country.
