JSW MG Motor India has introduced a new, budget-friendly variant of its popular electric crossover, the MG Windsor Commute. Specifically developed for fleet operators and taxi services, this model aims to make electric mobility more accessible and cost-effective for commercial use.
Priced at ₹13.49 lakh (ex-showroom), the Windsor Commute is approximately ₹61,000 cheaper than the base Excite variant of the standard Windsor EV. This aggressive pricing positions it as one of the more affordable electric options in the fleet segment.
The Commute variant has been quietly launched with a streamlined feature set to reduce costs while retaining essential practicality for high-utilization commercial duty. It is primarily targeted at cab aggregators, fleet owners, and commercial operators who prioritize low running costs, reliability, and total cost of ownership over luxury features.A video showing the MG Windsor Commute arriving at a dealership has been circulating online, generating interest among fleet buyers and enthusiasts alike.
The Windsor Commute uses the same 38 kWh battery pack as the standard Windsor Excite variant. Key specifications include:
- Power: 136 PS (134 hp)
- Torque: 200 Nm
- Range: Up to 332 km (ARAI certified)
- Charging: Supports 3.2 kW AC charging and up to 45 kW DC fast charging (20-80% in approximately 45 minutes)
Real-world range is expected to be between 200-250 km depending on traffic, load, and driving conditions — sufficient for daily city and inter-city fleet operations. The Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) option is also available on the Commute, which can significantly lower the upfront purchase cost for fleet operators.
To achieve the lower price, MG has removed several comfort, technology, and cosmetic features present on higher trims:
- What’s retained:
- LED headlights
- Cruise control
- Rear AC vents
- 60:40 split rear seats with recline function (highly useful for taxi passengers)
- 7-inch digital instrument cluster
- Power windows
- Disc brakes on all four wheels
- Basic safety kit including dual airbags, ESC, hill-hold assist, and TPMS
- What’s removed or simplified:
- Smaller/no large touchscreen infotainment system (some reports mention absence of the main touchscreen)
- Alloy wheels replaced with 17-inch steel wheels
- Reduced number of airbags (2 instead of 6 in higher variants)
- Manual air-conditioning in some descriptions (though some sources mention auto climate)
- No premium cosmetic or convenience features like panoramic roof, ventilated seats, or ambient lighting
The cabin adopts a simple, durable, dark-themed layout with fabric upholstery, making it easy to maintain in high-usage fleet environments.
The launch of the MG Windsor Commute reflects the growing demand for practical, low-cost electric vehicles in India’s commercial mobility sector. With rising fuel prices and increasing push for greener fleets by ride-hailing companies, this variant offers an attractive combination of decent range, spacious rear-seat comfort, and significantly lower operating costs compared to petrol or diesel counterparts.
While primarily aimed at fleets, dealer sources indicate it may also be available for private registration in some cases.
Deliveries of the MG Windsor Commute have already begun reaching dealerships, with expectations of strong uptake from corporate and taxi fleet operators in the coming months.
For fleet operators looking to electrify their operations without a heavy initial investment, the Windsor Commute presents a compelling, no-nonsense electric SUV solution tailored for Indian roads and usage patterns.
