MG Motor India is set to give one of its most iconic nameplates a bold new chapter. The brand that kicked off its Indian journey with the Hector in 2019 is reviving the badge — this time as the Hector Hawk.
The Hector Hawk will debut next week and will be the Indian name for both the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and pure electric versions of the Wuling Starlight 560, a modern 7-seater SUV. In many ways, the Hector Hawk serves as the spiritual successor to the original Hector — a “new Hector” for the evolving Indian market, much like Mahindra’s transition from the Scorpio to the Scorpio-N. MG trademarked the “Hector Hawk” name earlier this year, signaling a clear strategy to bridge heritage with next-generation powertrains.
Hector and Hector Hawk to Co-Exist
The original Hector (and Hector Plus) will continue in the lineup for some time alongside the new Hector Hawk. This phased approach allows MG to retain loyal customers while gradually transitioning its portfolio toward electrified options. Eventually, the standard Hector badge is expected to retire as the Hawk takes center stage.
What to Expect from the Hector Hawk
Based on the Starlight 560 platform, the Hector Hawk is a larger, more premium three-row SUV compared to the current Hector. It is expected to feature:
- Bold, modern styling with sleek LED lighting and a commanding road presence.
- Advanced powertrains:
- PHEV version: A 1.5L petrol engine paired with an electric motor for combined outputs around 194 hp, with decent pure-electric range.
- EV version: A larger battery pack (around 69 kWh class) promising strong range (global figures suggest over 500 km on the CLTC cycle).
The model is positioned as a more technologically advanced offering, likely featuring a large touchscreen, premium interiors, panoramic sunroof, ADAS, and other contemporary features to take on rivals like the Mahindra XUV700 and other upcoming electrified SUVs.
Why This Move Makes Sense for MG
The original Hector played a pivotal role in establishing MG as a serious player in India’s SUV market, known for its feature-loaded appeal and value. By attaching the well-loved “Hector” name to its new electrified flagship, MG is leveraging brand equity while signaling a shift toward hybrid and electric mobility — a critical direction as India pushes for greener transportation. Enthusiasts have already praised the new Hector Hawk badge design, describing it as bold and attractive, perfectly capturing the aggressive, premium vibe the new model aims for.
The Road Ahead
With the Hector Hawk launch just days away, MG is poised to strengthen its presence in the competitive mid-to-large SUV segment with both conventional and electrified powertrains. This dual-badging strategy gives buyers time to transition while positioning MG as a brand ready for the future.
