Mercedes-Benz has announced the new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class plug-in hybrid in India priced at Rs 3.35 crore ex-showroom. The major difference lies under the hood as the India-spec car only comes in the guise of the S 580e 4MATIC plug-in hybrid. This marks the first time a Maybach model has been sold in India with a rechargeable hybrid powertrain. Only 30 cars are initially allocated to make this new flagship model extra special and rare in India. The S 580e pairs a 3.0-litre inline-six petrol engine producing 443 hp with an electric motor that adds another 160 hp.
Together they produce a combined system output of 585 hp and 750 Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels through a refined nine-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission and the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. This electrified powertrain replaces the V8 option for the Indian market and allows the large luxury limousine to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 4.8 seconds while being electronically limited to a top speed of 250 km/h. A 22 kWh usable battery enables the car to be driven in pure-electric mode for up to 98 km under the WLTP cycle and Mercedes-Benz says that the vehicle can achieve an electric range of up to 100 km with effective recuperation.
In electric mode the car can be driven up to a speed of 140 km/h, making short city trips zero-emission and without any local emissions. Charging is possible on up to 11 kW on AC wallboxes and 60 kW on DC fast chargers and every S 580e comes with a complimentary home charging solution to promote regular electric use. In addition to the powertrain, the Maybach S 580e maintains the ultra-luxurious feel the brand is known for.
The long-wheelbase body, distinctive Maybach front design and opulent interior continue to differentiate it from the standard S-Class. Occupants enjoy the latest MBUX system with a large central display, digital instrument cluster and passenger screen, as well as high levels of craftsmanship, comfort seating and advanced driver assistance features expected at this price-point.
The launch of the S 580e reflects Mercedes-Benz India’s push into electrified luxury vehicles. Maybach already accounts for a significant share of S-Class sales in the country and India is one of the brand’s important global markets for the ultra-luxury nameplate. By launching a plug-in hybrid version with a limited initial allocation, Mercedes-Benz is able to provide its most discerning customers with a progressive yet familiar ownership experience that marries traditional petrol refinement with modern electric capability. With only 30 units allocated at launch and deliveries scheduled to commence in the coming weeks, the Mercedes-Maybach S 580e 4MATIC serves as a highly exclusive addition to the ultra-luxury segment in India. It successfully blends the brand’s signature opulence with a sophisticated plug-in hybrid system, appealing to buyers who seek prestige combined with the flexibility of electric driving with their flagship limousines.
