Matter AERA 2026: India’s First Geared Electric Bike and the Rise of AI-Defined Vehicles

Ahmedabad-based electric mobility pioneer MATTER has set a bold new benchmark in the Indian two-wheeler industry. At a high-profile closed-door leadership roundtable in New Delhi, Founder & Group CEO Mohal Lalbhai unveiled how the company’s flagship Matter AERA geared electric motorcycle is evolving into India’s first AI-Defined Vehicle (AI.DV). This marks a significant leap from traditional electric vehicles toward intelligent, software-led machines that learn, adapt, and improve over time.

Launched as India’s — and reportedly the world’s — first manufactured geared electric motorcycle, the Matter AERA (including the AERA 5000+ variant) brings back the joy of manual shifting to the electric world. At its heart lies HyperShift, a proprietary four-speed manual gearbox that delivers 12 riding combinations when paired with three ride modes. This design gives riders the tactile control and engagement of a traditional motorcycle while harnessing the instant torque, smoothness, and efficiency of an electric powertrain. Key highlights include:

  • Liquid-cooled motor and battery systems for sustained high performance in India’s demanding conditions.
  • Claimed real-world range of up to 172–250 km (depending on variant and conditions), with a 5–7 kWh battery pack.
  • Top speed around 105 km/h.
  • Vertical integration across motors, transmission, battery management system (BMS), and control software.

Priced from approximately ₹1.81–1.93 lakh, the AERA targets enthusiasts who want motorcycle-like thrill without compromising on modern EV benefits such as low running costs and zero tailpipe emissions.

During the recent New Delhi roundtable, Mohal Lalbhai outlined MATTER’s vision for AI-Defined Vehicles (AI.DV or AIDV) — a centralized computing architecture where AI directly governs critical vehicle systems.Unlike traditional software-defined vehicles (SDVs) that primarily handle infotainment and basic connectivity, AI.DV integrates artificial intelligence at the core to manage:

  • Motor power delivery
  • Battery health and thermal management
  • Cooling systems
  • Predictive fault detection
  • Adaptive ride characteristics

The AI platform enables continuous over-the-air (OTA) updates that enhance performance, efficiency, and safety without any hardware changes. It also opens new post-sale revenue opportunities through data-driven services, personalized tuning, and advanced features.Lalbhai described the shift in vehicle evolution:

  • Mechanically Defined Vehicles (MDVs) → Traditional ICE bikes.
  • Electronically Defined → Early electronic controls.
  • Software-Defined (SDVs) → AERA’s current stage with deep software integration.
  • AI-Defined (AI.DVs) → The future, where intelligence actively defines behavior

MATTER has already integrated advanced battery intelligence (in partnership with Iontra) as one of the core layers of its AIDV platform. The company plans to launch five new two-wheelers — including four electric motorcycles and one scooter — over the next 3–4 years, all built on this AI.DV architecture.

India’s two-wheeler market remains predominantly internal combustion engine (ICE)-driven, especially in the motorcycle segment, where many buyers value the “feel” of gears and engine character. The AERA directly addresses this by combining electric efficiency with geared riding dynamics, making it more appealing for real-world Indian conditions — from city traffic and highways to hilly roads and extreme heat.

By owning its full tech stack — from battery cells and packs to motors and gearboxes — MATTER achieves deeper optimization and faster iteration. The company has crossed 100 granted patents in India, underscoring its deep-tech focus.

The AI.DV approach also aligns with global trends toward software-led vehicles while tailoring solutions for India’s unique needs: affordability, repairability, high power density, and resilience in harsh environments.

With the AERA serving as the launchpad, MATTER is transitioning from a hardware-focused EV maker to a platform company where intelligence defines the vehicle. Features like predictive maintenance, adaptive performance tuning, and potential rare-earth-free motor technologies (hinted at in recent prototypes) could further strengthen its edge.

As Mohal Lalbhai emphasized at the roundtable, the future of mobility lies not just in electrification but in intelligent, evolving machines that grow with their owners.

The Matter AERA 2026 and its evolution into a true AI-Defined Vehicle signal an exciting chapter for Indian engineering — one where homegrown innovation challenges global giants and redefines what a motorcycle can be in the electric age.

For riders seeking thrill, control, and intelligence on two wheels, the AERA is more than just an electric bike. It’s a glimpse into the 22nd-century riding experience — available today, Made in India. MATTER is proving that the future of smart mobility isn’t about giving up the joy of riding — it’s about making it smarter, cleaner, and endlessly upgradable.
