Maruti Suzuki continues to lead the Indian passenger vehicle market for the largest car maker in the country, but its offerings do not include nearly as many electric cars as some of its competitors. For now, they only offer one battery-powered car, the e Vitara SUV. However, that will soon change, as Maruti Suzuki has plans to release their second electric vehicle in the Indian market.
This upcoming model will be an MPV, and have the internal development codename YMC. Prototypes of the vehicle have been seen undergoing heavy testing on the road on a couple of occasions. A new spy video that has surfaced recently showed some more detail on the camouflaged prototype, as it was seen driving on the road.
The testing efforts seem to indicate that Maruti Suzuki aims to go beyond a single electric SUV, and enter the burgeoning EV segment with a broader offering. An electric MPV will better appeal to families, as it prioritizes room, practicality and lower running costs, a combination that has long driven demand for multi-purpose vehicles in India. Although details on battery capacity, range, powertrains and projected pricing have yet to be released, the latest video shows progress on the project.
The camouflage still hides some finer design details, but the vehicle’s silhouette already points towards a practical, family-friendly vehicle fit for everyday use. Industry watchers believe that more spy images and videos will surface in the coming months, as testing intensifies, and details on the production car will slowly emerge, clarifying Maruti Suzuki’s plans on when they will introduce their second electric model to the Indian market. For now, the latest video is proof that the company’s electric ambitions are beginning to take shape on the road.
