Maruti Suzuki Launches First Electric Car in Indonesia With e-Vitara Debut

The Suzuki e-Vitara has officially made its debut in Indonesia as the Japanese automaker’s first fully electric vehicle in the market. Unveiled at the Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) 2026 at the Jakarta International Expo, the launch took place on February 5, 2026, marking a key step for Suzuki in entering the growing electric vehicle (EV) segment in the country.

This milestone comes as Indonesia’s demand for EVs has risen steadily over the past three years, driven by government incentives, improving charging infrastructure, and a push toward sustainable mobility. However, the market has been heavily dominated by Chinese brands, with relatively few Japanese models available until now. The e-Vitara’s arrival introduces a competitive option from a trusted name known for reliability and practicality.

Manufactured in India at Maruti Suzuki’s Hansalpur facility in Gujarat, the e-Vitara is exported as a Completely Built-Up (CBU) unit to Indonesia. This “Make in India, make for the world” approach highlights Suzuki’s global strategy, leveraging Indian production for export markets while preparing for broader electrification.

Pricing and Variants

In Indonesia, the Suzuki e-Vitara starts at Rp 755 million (on-the-road price in Jakarta, approximately equivalent to Rs 40.5 lakh or around USD 48,000, depending on exchange rates). A dual-tone color variant is priced slightly higher at Rp 758 million. These figures position the e-Vitara as a premium offering in the local market, influenced by import duties on CBU vehicles. For comparison, this is notably higher than Suzuki’s internal combustion engine models like the Grand Vitara in Indonesia. The launch focuses on front-wheel-drive (FWD) configurations in the initial rollout, with specs including a powerful electric motor delivering around 174 PS (approximately 142-184 PS range across variants) and strong torque output. Battery options feature Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) technology, with capacities such as 49 kWh and 61 kWh, delivering a WLTP-estimated range of up to around 426-500 km depending on the variant. This provides practical real-world usability for urban and inter-city driving.

Design and Features

The e-Vitara builds on Suzuki’s Vitara heritage as a subcompact crossover SUV, offering a modern electric twist with a sleek, aerodynamic design, bold front fascia, and contemporary interior. It emphasizes comfort with a spacious cabin, advanced infotainment, and features tailored for electrified driving, such as efficient energy management and regenerative braking. As Suzuki’s first dedicated battery electric vehicle (BEV), it complements the brand’s existing lineup of internal combustion engine (ICE) and hybrid models, signaling a broader commitment to sustainable mobility in Indonesia and beyond.

Market Context

While Chinese EV makers have captured significant share in Indonesia with aggressive pricing and diverse offerings, the entry of a Japanese brand like Suzuki could appeal to buyers seeking proven quality, strong after-sales support, and brand loyalty. The e-Vitara’s debut at IIMS 2026 allows visitors to experience the vehicle firsthand, with orders likely opening soon following the event. This launch not only strengthens Suzuki’s presence in Southeast Asia’s largest economy but also underscores the accelerating shift toward electrification in the region. As Indonesia continues to build its EV ecosystem, models like the e-Vitara are poised to play a role in diversifying options for eco-conscious consumers.
