Maruti Suzuki e Vitara Set to Mark Brand’s Entry into India’s Electric SUV Segment

Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to enter the electric SUV space in India with the upcoming e Vitara. Set to be sold exclusively through the Nexa retail network, the midsize electric SUV will compete in one of the fastest-growing EV segments and is expected to carry a starting price a little above Rs. 17 lakh (ex-showroom) to take on established rivals like the Hyundai Creta EV, Mahindra XEV 9e, MG ZS EV, Tata Curvv EV, and others.

The e Vitara marks a landmark moment for Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker, as its first fully electric vehicle. Built on the dedicated HEARTECT-e platform, the SUV offers two battery options: a 49 kWh pack (primarily for front-wheel-drive variants) delivering around 344 km WLTP range, and a larger 61 kWh pack providing a claimed MIDC range of up to 543 km—one of the highest in its class. Power outputs vary by configuration, with the 61 kWh 2WD producing about 172 bhp and the AWD (ALLGRIP-e) variant offering enhanced torque up to 300 Nm. Key features include Level-2 ADAS, a 10.1-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a digital instrument cluster, ventilated seats, a panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera, seven airbags (including knee airbag), and a premium dual-tone interior.

The e Vitara’s journey has already begun even before its domestic launch. Mass production is underway at Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat manufacturing facility in Hansalpur, with India-built units being exported to multiple overseas markets. Production commenced in August 2025, flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and exports kicked off shortly after, with the first batch of over 2,900 units shipped from Pipavav Port to 12 European countries including the UK, Germany, France, Norway, and Sweden. The Gujarat plant serves as the global production hub for the model, targeting exports to over 100 countries, including Japan, emerging markets in Southeast Asia and Africa, and developed regions. This positions India as a key export base for Suzuki’s electrification strategy, with annual export ambitions of 50,000–100,000 units.

Alongside product development, the company has also outlined its long-term EV ecosystem strategy—committing to support the debut of over one lakh public charging points across the country by the end of this decade. Maruti Suzuki has invested around ₹250 crore to establish this infrastructure, including over 2,000 exclusive charging points at its dealerships and service workshops spanning more than 1,100 cities. Partnerships with 13 leading Charge Point Operators and aggregators provide seamless access via the ‘e for me’ app, which enables locating stations, UPI payments, tap-and-charge functionality, home charger management, and in-car integration. The company has also EV-ready over 1,500 workshops and trained a 1.5 lakh-strong workforce for specialized maintenance and support. Additional incentives include an 8-year/160,000 km battery and motor warranty, assured buyback programs, and Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) options to lower upfront costs.

Sales of the e Vitara are set to commence in January 2026, with bookings expected to open soon through Nexa dealerships—the premium channel that already hosts models like the Grand Vitara, Baleno, and Jimny. This exclusive Nexa positioning aligns with the e Vitara’s feature-rich, premium appeal, targeting urban buyers seeking comfort, technology, and confidence in electric ownership.

As India’s EV market surges—with passenger EV penetration climbing rapidly—Maruti Suzuki’s entry brings the brand’s legendary reliability, vast service network, and aggressive ecosystem buildout to the segment. The e Vitara is poised to democratize electric SUVs, bridging affordability with long-range capability and robust infrastructure support, while reinforcing India’s role in global sustainable mobility. With strong competition heating up, this debut could accelerate mainstream EV adoption and set new benchmarks for the industry.
