Maruti Suzuki and Toyota Kirloskar Motor Enter EV Era: First Models from Gujarat Already Sold in Europe

In a landmark moment for India’s electric vehicle ambitions, Maruti Suzuki and its strategic partner Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) have rolled out their inaugural battery electric vehicles, with production centered at the Hansalpur facility in Gujarat. The Maruti Suzuki e Vitara — the brand’s first-ever EV — has been in production since August 2025, and exports to European markets began shortly after, with thousands of units already on sale across the continent. This “Made in India, Make for the World” initiative underscores India’s growing role as a global EV manufacturing hub.

Production and Export Milestone

The e Vitara is exclusively manufactured at Maruti Suzuki’s Hansalpur plant in Gujarat, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated for EV production in August 2025. The facility serves as the global production hub for the model, with a significant portion of output — around 50% — destined for export. Over 2,900 units were shipped in the first batch from Pipavav Port to 12 European countries, including the UK, Germany, France, Norway, Sweden, and others, with cumulative exports now exceeding several thousand. The vehicle is already available for sale in these markets, marking a proud achievement for the “Make in India” initiative.

The e Vitara: Specs and Powertrain

Unveiled at Auto Expo 2025, the e Vitara is built on the advanced HEARTECT-e pure-electric platform, co-developed with Toyota, offering structural rigidity, a low center of gravity, and a flat floor for enhanced cabin space. Measuring 4,275 mm long, 1,800 mm wide, 1,640 mm tall, with a generous 2,700 mm wheelbase, it positions itself as a premium compact SUV.It features front-wheel drive only (at launch), with two motor and battery options using durable LFP (lithium iron phosphate) blade cells:

  • Base variant: 105.8 kW (142 hp) motor producing 192.5 Nm of torque, paired with a 49 kWh battery.
  • Higher variants: More powerful motor delivering up to 128-174 hp (depending on configuration) with the same torque, and a larger 61 kWh battery offering an impressive ARAI-certified range of up to 543 km.

As part of the long-standing Suzuki-Toyota alliance, Toyota Kirloskar Motor is set to introduce its first EV — the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV — a rebadged version of the e Vitara with distinct styling, including a sharper, hammerhead-inspired front fascia. It shares the same powertrain, battery options, and dimensions, promising similar performance and range. The Urban Cruiser EV is expected to launch in India soon, following its international debut, and will be produced at the same Hansalpur facility.

With the e Vitara already proving its mettle in Europe and domestic launch preparations underway (expected early 2026), Maruti Suzuki and Toyota are accelerating India’s EV transition. The partnership leverages shared technology, local production advantages, and export focus to challenge established players while boosting jobs, skills, and sustainable mobility. This duo’s premium electric SUVs signal a new chapter for accessible, high-quality EVs “Made in India” — ready for the world.
