Maruti Suzuki Accelerates into Electric Mobility: e Vitara Debuts Soon, Followed by All-Electric MPV in Late 2026

As India’s automotive landscape shifts toward sustainable transportation, Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) is making a bold entry into the electric vehicle (EV) segment. The company’s first battery electric vehicle (BEV), the e Vitara, is set to launch in India very soon, with the official price announcement having taken place on December 2, 2025. This mid-size electric SUV marks the beginning of Maruti’s ambitious EV roadmap, which includes multiple models by 2030.

Following closely on its heels, Maruti is developing its second EV — an all-electric multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) internally codenamed YMC. Expected to debut in late 2026 (with production likely starting around September 2026), this family-oriented electric MPV will build on the success of the e Vitara and cater to India’s strong demand for spacious, practical people-movers.

e Vitara: Maruti’s First Electric Offering

The e Vitara represents Maruti Suzuki’s long-awaited foray into pure electric mobility. Unveiled globally and already in production at the company’s Hansalpur facility in Gujarat (which also serves as an export hub to Europe), the e Vitara is built on Suzuki’s dedicated HEARTECT-e platform (also referred to as the 27PL skateboard architecture). This born-electric platform, developed in collaboration with Toyota, offers a low center of gravity, efficient packaging, and the flexibility to support various body styles.

The e Vitara comes with two LFP battery pack options:

  • 49 kWh — Delivering around 344 km (WLTP) range, suited for urban and daily commuting needs.
  • 61 kWh — Offering an impressive ARAI-claimed range of up to 543 km on a single charge, making it ideal for longer trips.

Power comes from a front-mounted electric motor (with optional all-wheel-drive variants in higher trims), producing outputs ranging from approximately 142–174 bhp and torque up to 193 Nm (with higher figures in select configurations). The vehicle supports fast DC charging, achieving 0–80% in about 50 minutes.

Inside, the e Vitara boasts a premium cabin with dual screens (a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen), ventilated seats, Level 2 ADAS features, 360-degree camera, seven airbags, and connected tech via the Suzuki Connect app. It competes directly with models like the Tata Curvv.ev, Hyundai Creta Electric, Mahindra BE 6, and MG ZS EV in the mid-size electric SUV space.

Maruti has also introduced the ‘e for me’ mobile app to simplify EV ownership, offering features like charging station locator, remote home charger control, UPI payments, and “Tap N Charge” support.

YMC Electric MPV: A Family-Focused Second Act

Hot on the e Vitara’s success, Maruti is gearing up for its second EV — the YMC, a three-row electric MPV positioned above the current Ertiga and XL6 in the lineup. This model will serve as a practical, spacious alternative for large families transitioning to electric mobility, potentially rivaling upcoming models like the Kia Carens Clavis EV.

The YMC will be underpinned by a derivative of the same 27PL skateboard architecture used in the e Vitara. This shared platform ensures cost efficiencies, manufacturing synergies, and consistent performance across Maruti’s growing EV portfolio.

While detailed specifications are yet to be confirmed, the electric MPV is expected to inherit the e Vitara’s powertrain components, including:

  • 49 kWh and 61 kWh battery pack options.
  • Similar electric motor setups.
  • A potential range close to 500–543 km (ARAI) on the larger battery, making it suitable for inter-city family travel.

The flexible skateboard design will allow for optimal interior space, ample seating for seven passengers, and generous boot capacity — key priorities for Indian buyers in the MPV segment.

Production of the YMC is slated for the same Hansalpur plant in Gujarat, which has already proven its capability with the e Vitara (including exports to over 100 countries). The collaboration with Toyota is likely to extend here as well, potentially leading to a shared or badge-engineered version.

Maruti Suzuki is not just launching vehicles — it’s creating a comprehensive EV ecosystem. The company has already established over 2,000 charging points across 1,100+ cities and aims for one lakh charging points by 2030 through partnerships with dealers and charging operators. With the e Vitara now launched and the YMC on the horizon, Maruti is positioning itself to capture a significant share of India’s growing EV market. The focus on affordability, range confidence, and Maruti’s legendary service network could accelerate mass adoption of electric vehicles among Indian families.

As Shashank Srivastava, Executive Officer (Marketing & Sales), Maruti Suzuki, has emphasized, these models are part of the company’s vision to make electric mobility accessible and practical for every Indian household. The journey from India’s largest carmaker to a leader in sustainable mobility is well underway — and it’s electrifying!
