Mahindra’s flagship electric SUV, the XEV 9S, has recorded a solid performance in the first half of 2026 (January–June), demonstrating robust demand in India’s competitive electric vehicle segment.

During H1 2026, Mahindra dispatched 18,167 units of the XEV 9S. Retail registrations (actual customer deliveries) stood at 13,281 units. The gap between dispatch and retail reflects healthy channel inventory build-up as the company prepares for sustained demand in the second half of the year.

One of the clearest signals from the retail data is the overwhelming preference for the larger battery pack. Out of 13,281 retail registrations:

  • 11,977 units (90.2%) were equipped with the 79 kWh battery
  • Only 1,304 units (9.8%) opted for the 70 kWh pack

This 90:10 split confirms that range anxiety remains a key concern for buyers in the premium SUV segment, with the majority willing to pay a premium for the extended range and performance offered by the larger battery.

While the battery choice headline is strong, the variant mix tells an even more significant story about customer behaviour.Pack 3 and Pack 3 Above variants together accounted for 10,564 units, representing a dominant 79.5% of total retail sales.

  • Pack 3: 5,626 units
  • Pack 3 Above: 4,938 units

This means nearly 8 out of 10 buyers chose the top-end trims, which fall primarily in the ₹25–35 lakh (on-road) price bracket. Rather than opting for base or mid variants to minimise purchase price, customers are prioritising:

  • Advanced technology and ADAS features
  • Superior interior quality and comfort
  • Higher performance and efficiency
  • Maximum range and faster charging capabilities

This strong premiumisation trend indicates that Mahindra has successfully positioned the XEV 9S as a desirable, feature-rich electric SUV capable of competing with established luxury and premium players in the segment.

The H1 2026 data underscores a maturing Indian EV buyer who is moving beyond entry-level electric options toward vehicles that deliver a complete premium ownership experience. Mahindra’s strategy of offering differentiated battery packs and well-equipped higher variants appears to be resonating strongly with target customers.

With healthy dispatches, dominant uptake of the larger battery, and an 80% top-variant skew, the XEV 9S enters the second half of 2026 with strong momentum. The coming months will be crucial as Mahindra scales production and addresses waiting periods that may emerge due to the skew toward higher configurations.

The Mahindra XEV 9S is not just selling — it is selling at the top end. This bodes well for both revenue realisation and brand positioning in India’s premium electric SUV market.
