Mahindra Accelerates ‘Born Electric’ Production Amid Strong Consumer Demand

Mahindra & Mahindra is significantly scaling up production of its ‘Born Electric’ portfolio following an overwhelming response from Indian consumers. The company, which recently launched the BE 6, XEV 9e, and the premium XEV 9S (badged as the global MG Cyberster in some markets), is witnessing strong booking momentum and is now fast-tracking capacity expansion to meet the rising demand.

Speaking to PTI at the XEV 9S launch event this month, Rakesh Jejurikar, Executive Director and CEO (Auto and Farm Sectors) at Mahindra & Mahindra, revealed aggressive production ramp-up plans at the company’s Chakan plant in Maharashtra.

Key highlights of the expansion:

  • Current installed capacity: 90,000 units annually
  • Target capacity by March 2026: 1.2 lakh units annually
  • Current monthly production: ~5,000 units
  • Targeted monthly output in the near term: 8,000 units
  • Expected monthly sales in coming months: ~7,000 units (nearly 90% of production)

This means Mahindra is preparing to more than double its actual monthly output of Born Electric vehicles within the next few months, while the longer-term capacity addition will make the Chakan facility one of the largest dedicated EV production hubs in the country.

Jejurikar further shared an ambitious roadmap: by March 2028, Mahindra expects electric vehicles to contribute approximately 25% of its total passenger vehicle sales in India. The bulk of this volume is projected to come from the new dedicated Born Electric platform models — BE 6, XEV 9e, and the flagship XEV 9S — rather than electrified versions of existing ICE models.

The strong early response to the Born Electric line-up, which features futuristic design, segment-leading range (up to 656 km claimed), ultra-fast charging capability (0–80% in under 20 minutes on compatible chargers), and premium interiors, has clearly taken the company by pleasant surprise. Bookings for the BE 6 and XEV 9e have already crossed several thousand units within weeks of opening, prompting the immediate production scale-up.

With competitors like Tata Motors still dominating the mass-market EV space and Hyundai-Kia rapidly gaining ground in the premium segment, Mahindra’s aggressive capacity expansion signals its intent to capture a significant slice of India’s fast-growing electric passenger vehicle market in the second half of this decade. As the company races toward its 25% electrification target by 2028, the coming 12–18 months will be crucial in establishing the Born Electric range as a serious volume player in the Indian EV ecosystem.
