Long Drive Test: Tata Punch EV Takes on the Bengaluru–Chennai Highway Run

A recent long-distance drive video has offered fresh insights into the real-world performance of the Tata Punch EV, as Iyer documents his inter-city journey from Bengaluru to Chennai in the electric SUV.

In the video, Iyer begins by sharing his views on electric vehicles based on his friends’ experiences. While several of them already own EVs, he believes that electric cars are currently more suited for city driving rather than long inter-city commutes. To test this assumption, he decides to take the Punch EV on a familiar highway route.

He starts the journey with a fully charged battery at 100 percent and sets off at 2:00 pm. The Bengaluru–Chennai stretch spans around 360 kilometres and typically takes him close to six hours to complete. According to Iyer, the Punch EV feels comfortable and confidence-inspiring on the highway, delivering a smooth and stable driving experience throughout the initial leg of the trip.

As he cruises along the well-known corridor, Iyer highlights the car’s performance and ride quality, noting that the electric powertrain makes highway driving effortless and quiet. He also mentions that the vehicle feels planted at cruising speeds, which adds to overall driving comfort.

Midway through the journey, Iyer makes his usual stop at Vaniyambadi, a common halt for many travellers on this route. By the time he reaches this point, the battery charge has dropped to 61 percent, indicating relatively efficient energy consumption over the first half of the drive.

This checkpoint becomes an important reference for evaluating the Punch EV’s real-world range and highway usability. Covering nearly half the distance with close to two-thirds of the battery still remaining suggests that the vehicle is capable of handling inter-city trips with careful planning.

The video offers a practical perspective on long-distance EV ownership in India, especially for buyers who are unsure about highway travel in electric cars. Backed by Tata Motors’ growing EV ecosystem and charging infrastructure, experiences like these help build confidence among prospective customers.

While Iyer initially believed EVs were better suited for city use, his Bengaluru–Chennai drive shows that models like the Punch EV are gradually bridging the gap between urban commuting and inter-city travel, making electric mobility more versatile for everyday Indian motorists.
