The Kolkata Police (KP) is set to undergo a significant modernisation push with plans to induct 200 electric vehicles into its fleet at an estimated investment of ₹44 crore. The move marks a revival of the force’s electric vehicle procurement plan that was first outlined in 2023 and aligns with broader sustainability and efficiency goals.
As part of this transition, KP will gradually replace its ageing diesel-powered patrol vehicles with electric alternatives. The Tata Nexon EV has reportedly been chosen for the fleet expansion, a model that is already being used by the Kolkata Police in limited numbers. The shift to EVs is expected to reduce operating costs, lower emissions, and improve overall fleet reliability for day-to-day policing duties across the city.
Beyond mobility upgrades, the Kolkata Police is also undertaking a major overhaul of its weaponry. The force will phase out its decades-old 0.303 rifles and replace them with modern assault rifles modelled on the Bulgarian AR-M1 design. These new rifles have been developed by the Ordnance Factory and are intended to enhance operational effectiveness and officer safety.
In parallel, KP is strengthening its cyber policing capabilities. Existing cyber laboratories are being upgraded to improve digital investigation infrastructure, while additional backup systems are being developed to ensure quicker response times and continuity during complex cybercrime investigations.
The modernisation programme also includes improvements to personnel equipment and facilities, with special focus on enhancing safety and operational readiness. Together, these measures underline the Kolkata Police’s broader push towards a technologically advanced, environmentally responsible, and better-equipped law enforcement force suited to contemporary policing challenges.
