Kia has outlined an ambitious electrification roadmap for the Indian market, signalling a major push into hybrids and electric vehicles. The Korean automaker plans to introduce six new hybrid models and one subcompact EV in India by 2029. While the full rollout will take a few years, Kia is kicking things off strongly in 2026 with three key launches.
2026 Launches: Seltos EV Leads the Charge
The most anticipated model arriving this year is the Kia Seltos EV. Expected to be showcased in July 2026, the electric Seltos will closely mirror the design of its ICE sibling, minus the traditional grille, and will feature aero-optimized wheels similar to those on the Carens Clavis EV and EV9.
Interior and Features
The cabin layout, upholstery options, and overall design will remain largely identical to the current Seltos, including segment-first features like rear-seat ventilation.
Powertrain and Range
It is expected to use a 42 kWh battery pack paired with a front-wheel-drive motor producing 133 bhp and 255 Nm of torque. Kia claims a range of 404 km, which should translate to a realistic around 300–310 km under Indian driving conditions (C75 cycle). Pricing is projected between ₹14 lakh and ₹20 lakh (ex-showroom), positioning it as a direct rival to the Tata Nexon EV and the upcoming Renault Brezza EV (and its Nissan sibling).
Sorento Hybrid: Kia’s First Hybrid for India
Following the Seltos EV, Kia will introduce its first hybrid model for India — the Sorento Hybrid. Powered by a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol hybrid system, the powertrain combines:
- Petrol engine: 168 bhp and 265 Nm
- Electric motor: 65 bhp and 250 Nm
The model will be offered in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations. Strong fuel efficiency figures from global markets are expected to carry over, making mileage a key selling point in the premium SUV segment.
Positioning and Pricing
Priced around ₹40–45 lakh, the Sorento Hybrid will compete with the Toyota Fortuner, Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line, Škoda Kodiaq, and MG Gloster. It also serves as a more accessible alternative to entry-level luxury SUVs like the Mercedes-Benz GLA, BMW X1 LWB, and rivals such as the BYD Seal Lion 7 and Toyota Camry.
Carnival Hybrid Joins the Lineup
Kia will also launch a Carnival Hybrid in 2026, using the same 1.6-litre turbo-petrol hybrid powertrain. It will slot below the existing 2.2-litre diesel variant as part of a model-year update, likely bringing fresh features and upholstery options to the popular MPV.
2027–2029: Broader Hybrid Rollout and Subcompact EV
Kia’s longer-term plans focus on democratizing hybrid technology across its popular models:
- Hybrid Seltos and Carens Clavis: Both will receive the 1.6-litre turbo-petrol hybrid system (FWD in India). The Seltos Hybrid has already been showcased in markets like the US.
- Hybrid Sonet: A compact SUV hybrid is expected, likely powered by a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol hybrid engine. This will help Kia challenge upcoming hybrids from Maruti Suzuki (Fronx, Brezza) and others.
- Subcompact EV: A Sonet-sized electric vehicle is planned, targeting the growing entry-level EV segment alongside future models like the next-gen Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV 3XO EV.
Kia will need to deliver competitive mileage figures — ideally surpassing the ~28 kmpl claimed by Maruti and Toyota hybrids — and offer meaningful electric-only range to stand out.
Network Expansion to Support Growth
To back its product offensive, Kia plans to expand its Indian footprint significantly. The company aims to grow its dealer and service network from 540 touchpoints in 2025 to 800 by 2030, including new showrooms, service centres, and pre-owned sales outlets.
