Kia India has introduced a new Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) finance program for its first Made-in-India electric vehicle, the Carens Clavis EV. This innovative scheme significantly lowers the upfront cost of EV ownership, making electric mobility more accessible to a larger number of Indian buyers
The BaaS model separates the cost of the vehicle chassis (body) and the battery pack into two independent financing components:
- Customers finance the chassis through a standard auto loan (up to 60 months tenure).
- The battery is subscribed on a pay-per-use basis at a fixed rate of Rs 3.3 per kilometre, with flexible tenure up to 96 months.
This dual-loan structure reduces the effective on-road price by ₹5.15 lakh to ₹6.05 lakh depending on the variant, while the battery subscription ensures predictable running costs. The program is backed by major financiers including ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Bajaj Finserv.
Variant-wise Pricing Under BaaS
| Variant | Ex-Showroom Price | Chassis Price (BaaS) | Down Payment (from) | EMI (from) | Battery Fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard (42 kWh) | ₹17.99 lakh | ₹12.84 lakh | ₹51,520 | ₹26,650 | ₹3.3/km |
| Extended (51.4 kWh) | ₹21.99 lakh | ₹15.94 lakh | ₹60,452 | ₹33,099 | ₹3.3/km |
Key Benefits of the Program
- Lower Entry Barrier: Effective vehicle price drops substantially, bringing the Carens Clavis EV closer to the price of comparable petrol/diesel MPVs.
- Flexible Ownership: Customers pay for the battery only as they use it. Higher mileage users pay more, while lower usage benefits from reduced costs.
- Battery Management: Kia handles battery health, warranty, and eventual replacement/upgrade responsibility under the subscription model.
- Predictable Costs: Fixed per-km battery charge provides transparency.
For context, a customer driving 1,000 km per month would pay approximately ₹3,300 extra towards the battery subscription, in addition to the chassis EMI.
